AdAware Quarantines AdAware
When I decided to replace my AVG antivirus with Ad-Aware, I uninstalled AVG, downloaded the Ad-Aware version 11.1.5354 install, adawaresetup.exe, to my download folder and installed Ad-Aware. That was about a week ago. Ad-Aware is now informing me that it has quarantined adawaresetup.exe because it is potentially harmful. I don't like that it doesn't tell me what is potentially harmful about adawaresetup.exe, but at least it allows me to Restore the quaratined file. How do I discover what Ad-Aware found in adawaresetup.exe? Should I Restore the adawaresetup.exe?

Hi BillyDick,
Can I ask you to restore the file from quarantine, zip it and upload it to this thread? I'd like to check the file out. It would also be helpful if you could tell me where you downloaded the file from.
When restoring the file from quarantine, turn off real time protection first so that the file is not immediately detected as soon as it is released from quarantine.
Thanks!
Andy

LS Andy:
I clicked on Download from your site and it redirected me to "http://download.cnet.com/Ad-Aware-Free-Antivirus-+/3000-8022_4-10045910.html?part=dl-&subj=dl&tag=button"
I have attached the file I used to install Ad-Aware as a zip file (adawaresetup.zip). Once I downloaded the file. I renamed it to "Adaware 11.1.5354 adawaresetup.exe".

We don't notify users of moved topics, since it's very easy to find the moved topic.

My post was moved to this thread. There is an arrow on my original post in Ad-Aware Support/Ad Aware 11. Hovering over that arrow says "This topic has been moved". Moved where? I clicked on my post and noticed it now resides in "Lavasoft Support Forums/False Positives/Report a False Positive". Would have been nice if someone had notified me.

Hey Andy;
Have you determined what kind of virus infected the file I included as an attachment?

Hi,
The installer you have for Ad-Aware has been 'wrapped' in another installer.
Ad-Aware itself is not being detected although the wrapper around the Ad-Aware installer is being detected. It seems that someone has taken our installer and wrapped it in their own installer, then made it available for download.
This is something that we do not allow our partners to do, including download.com. Is it possible you got the installer from another download site?

Hi,
Thanks for confirming. We'll have to take this up with download.com.
Regarding the file - it is not a false positive or accidental detection. Feel free to quarantine/remove it.
Regards,
Andy

Hi Andy;
I'm confused that AD-Aware did not detect the virus after the installation and the first scan. How is it possible that the installer adawaresetup.exe, suddenly picked up a virus a week after it was downloaded?
I'm a little more at ease about my decision to install Ad-Aware though. Ad-Aware detected and quarantined the offending file immediatley after I un-zipped it.
I like to have a copy of the files that I install in my download folder, so I'm going to download adawaresetup.exe from your site again, and we'll see what happens.

Latest Ad-Aware anomoly:
Recently received "Service Unavailable" on Ad-Aware and decided to re-install.
I did not want to be on the Internet without an antivirus, so I deleted the quarantined install file from Ad-Aware, downloaded a fresh copy of the install file from the Ad-Aware site, uninstalled Ad-Aware and removed all traces from hard drive and registry. Re-installed Ad-Aware (which took 3 1/2 hours) and somehow this install seemed different from the first install. Ad-Aware had no problem with the definitions file(I had to manually download and install the definitions file the first time) and did an automatic quick scan to finish the install. When install completed, was asked to register and that went OK. So far, no problems with "Service Unavailable". I'll keep my fingers crossed.

Hi,
To be clear, the element flagged was not a virus, rather a 'wrapper' around the legtimate Ad-Aware installer.
It seems detection routines for that particular element were added to the detection database at some point after you had downloaded it.
