    Hi:

I have Ad-aware 2007 free version 7.0.2.6 and today when I have tried to check for Definition Updates I get a delayed "Checking information about definition updates, please wait etc" and finally I get an Error Notice that says "SSL Download failed" Suggested Action "Run Web Update". I try to run Web Update and also get an error.

My current version of Definition Updates is 0058.0000.

All this just started today 10 Mar 08 and I have the same problem on both a Sony desktop and Toshiba laptop computers. Sorta acts like it cannot connect to your server, but I can access Lavasoft websites with no problems.

    Any remedy forthcoming?

    Thanks

Welcome to the Lavasoft Support Forum

The Error message "SSL download failed" is caused by Ad-Aware 2007 not getting access to the Internet.

First of all, make sure that your system is connected to the Internet.

If you are using a proxy server, make sure to configure the Ad-Aware WebUpdate settings. In Ad-Aware 2007->WebUpdate->Proxy settings.

Save the new settings and try a webupdate again.

If you still have problems, try this:

    • Turn off all security software like Firewalls (check your router firewall as well) and any Antivirus programs.

    • Restart Ad-Aware and try to do a webupdate if you haven't activated the automatic update.

If you do not get an error message, configure your security software to grant Ad-Aware 2007 network access, before turning them on again

I saw that error today as well. I don't know the def numbers. But I wonder if it was because I used AVG Anti-spyware - the new one and the ad-aware 2007.

I have been able to download manual update, but it won't take. I'm not willing to disable my firewall in order to get the update, as I've done it before without having to do so. If there's a "bug" in this release, I hope Lavasoft finds it...

    Hi:

I realize that I cannot connect with Lavasoft update site, but I am using broadband and I am connected all the time. I do not have a proxy and have added Lavasoft as a Trusted Site. I have chceked everything that you listed.

I am using AVG version 7.5.518 and have no problems with it in this regards. I can connect with everything except Ad-arwe 2007 updates.

In fact, I just did a complete unintsall including deleting all Lavasoft Registry entries and did a reinstall and still have the same problem.

I am at a total losy as to why this is happening.

I have never had a problem updating Defs, today is the first day I was unable to install new defs.

I am a long-time Ad-Aware user...and can no longer update my definition files, etc....for the same exact reasons that others here are stating. This is very frustrating because I have come to rely heavily on Ad-Aware to help maintain my computer and keep it running smoothly. I consider myself very "computer-literate", so I have done all the steps specified, plus, like the other man in this forum, I have uninstalled completely (including registry files) and then re-installed. I have done this twice now with no success. HELP!!! I do NOT want to have to shop for another program. Thank you!!

I'm beta tester, but reading this tried to update and got same message as those before me instead of regular "Your definitions are up to date" or something similar. I didn't try to get update on a web and download it, but new beta is working fine.

For those that tried to scroll a bit down from "Status window" update and tried to update from "Web update" update it's wrong approach, because it is SAME update. Running web update Ad-Aware is suggesting means go to the web, download last "Definition files" 0059.0000 and install it through "settings" window in "Web update" section.

Is there a chance there are instructions on how to do this online? I have downloaded the definitions and unzipped the core into my adaware 2007 folder but when I open the program it doesn't autoupdate like the manual says. Is there something I'm missing?

Did you put the core file in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Lavasoft\Ad-Aware 2007

How do you download the file? Where did you find it? I thought there was a problem with my computer. I uninstalled then reinstalled 2007 and still the same problem. Now my definitions are old jan 1 i think. I hope someone figures this out.

I am connected to the internet and am getting the same error. This seems to be happening to many of us so I am wondering if it's on your server, rather than our internet connections. I have been trying to update for two days. If was the individual user, many of us would be not be having this problem.

I downloaded the core file as instructed into my program folder. Then I unzipped the core file into the adaware2007 folder as instructed. But my definitions still do not update.

Where do we find the core file?

When you manually download the updates, the file is called "core" unless you change it. Choose where you want to put this file- I chose "Programs" to make it easy to find. It will be a zip file. The instructions for how to manually download the updates are on the lavasoft site- go to adaware and look around until you find how to download the updates.

    Hi:

Apparently Lavasoft has fixed this problem, as now I have been able to update the Definitions on both my desktop and laptop.

Hopefully all of you that have been unable too now can update your Definitions.

I got it on both my computers by turning off my firewall and using webupdate. Hope you fix it soon.

I am having the same problem and followed all the suggestions in this thread and in other areas of the forum. I have 7.0.2.6 (free) on 2 home computers...upgraded from SE with no visible remnants of the old version. My last successful definition update was 0045.0000, January , 2008. Since then I have not been able to update. I tried immediately before this post.

Please do not reply with the canned instructions about disabling the firewall or goning through Web Updater.

    Thanks...Gary

    Hello all,

I have an inquiry in to both the Support Team and the Developers as to why we are seeing an increase in this problem and will let you know if they can find what is causing it.

I did test my own version here and got the same SSL download error everyone has been reporting so I do think this may be a true bug.

Here is what I did to fix it. I added Ad-Aware 2007 to my firewall's program exception list (using the Windows firewall here - but you can usually do the same with other software firewalls). That just to make sure my firewall wasn't interferring (because usually that SSL download error means it can't connect to the update site and it usually IS the firewall causing the problem, but not always).

I waited a few minutes and then tried the update again except I used the "other" button that is under *Webupdate* (not the one on the main screen, see screenshot for the "other" update button). This one will also give you a download status bar so you can monitor the progress of the download.

That worked for me, except my Ad-Aware service then crashed.

If you experience the same, try closing the program and restart the service:

Go to Start > Run and type in the box: services.msc

If you see the service is stopped, then choose to *restart* the service

If you are still having problems, wait a bit and try again later. If any news comes from the Developers or the Support Team that help, I'll be sure to post them here in this thread.

Will close the other duplicate threads on the same subject so we don't have more than one going at once and you can just follow this one.

Your mileage may vary, but at least I could get the program to fetch the updates and it now shows ver. 0059 for the latest update but the date is still showing March 6.

I had a similar SSL Download Failed problem just now (March 11th 2008) and speculated that it might be my router's firewall.

Thus, I switched on a software firewall and watched what happened when it attempted to update. It picked port 1259, so I enabled the router's firewall to allow the port.

It failed so I did it all again. It picked port 1338! It appears to pick from a range of ports.

I was able to get the update by specifying a range of allowed ports from 1200-1400.

Perhaps somebody can give us the official port range?

    Hi fredbare,

I don't know but I'll see if I can find out. Mine failed even though I don't specify by port number but that is a possibility.

    Hi

The updater is already in my firewalls and antivirus program. It has to be a problem on Lavasoft end since we have been able to get the definition updates all the time.. That is one feature of the program that does work for me usually. I even had 2 days in a row again when it found the tracking cookies. With so many complaining about this, it has to be something on their end, perhaps their fire wall or ISP' that Lavasoft uses. Just an idea...

I think you are wrong on that one. The problem still exists, so when will they fix the problem. The last time something like this happened to me the reply was>>>>>> it will be fixed in the next version on Adaware<<<<

Just glad I am using the free version. LS are not very good at fixing update problems and very good at creating them.

Yup, evidently Lavasoft fixed whatever problem THEY were having as I got v59 a while ago and all is good now with no communication problems (like I was having yesterday 3/10/08) receiving updates. YIPPPEEEEE !!

I beg to differ, I'm still having the same issues. Wonder if it might be due to a recent Windows XP update?

I'm afraid they haven't fixed it - I'm still getting 'SSL UPDATE FAILED' message even though nothing has changed on my PC since last update. Unbelievably Lavasoft FAQs suggests TURNING OFF FIREWALL AND ANTIVIRUS !!! to attempt download.

ARE THEY JOKING ??. The ultimate irony is that when Web Update fails in this way the suggested solution is 'Run Web Update'!!

Come on Lavasoft - come out with your hands up.
