Solution if AdAware does not start after clicking program icon
If problem remains, do the following:
Go to Start -> Run, type cmd and press Enter. Or go to Start -> type cmd in the field “Search programs and filed”, right click on cmd it and choose “Run as Administrator”. Automatically it opens with C:\Users\username directory and you should go to the Program Files.
For that you should type cd ..\..\ and press Enter. It should looks like C:\Users\username>cd ..\..\. After cd should be space. After pressing Enter it looks like C:\>.
Then you should go to Program Files (x86)\Ad-Aware Antivirus (for 64bits OS) or Program Files\Ad-Aware Antivirus (for 32bits OS). For this you can use the Tab key, pressing it you will find necessary folder, after each folder you should type/. Or you can just type "Program Files (x86)\Ad-Aware Antivirus\AdAware.exe" /regserver and it will look like C:\>"Program Files (x86)\Ad-Aware Antivirus\AdAware.exe" /regserver and press Enter.
The same should be done for AdAwareService.exe, first with /regserver , then with -service.
After pressing Enter you will see C:\>. You should go to Program Files (x86)\Ad-Aware Antivirus (for 64bits OS) or Program Files\Ad-Aware Antivirus (for 32bits OS) as was done before but this time for AdAwareService.exe. You can do that pressing the Tab key or you can just type "Program Files (x86)\Ad-Aware Antivirus\ AdAwareService.exe" /regserver and it will look like C:\>"Program Files (x86)\Ad-Aware Antivirus\ AdAwareService.exe" /regserver and press Enter.
Now for AdAwareService.exe, with -service. Again, do that using the Tab key or you can just type "Program Files (x86)\Ad-Aware Antivirus\ AdAwareService.exe" -service and it will look like C:\>"Program Files (x86)\Ad-Aware Antivirus\ AdAwareService.exe" -service and press Enter.

I've tried the above with no luck. Any help? 0 -
Hi jrhunter10,
Did you have another antivirus program installed that was uninstalled before you tried to install Ad-Aware 10.1?
Which Windows version (including 32 or 64 bits) do you have? That information will make it possible to write the commands without several alternatives.0 -
Hello adaniel21,
I will write you in PM. Can you look and answer please?
Thanks,
Ann0 -
LS Ann -
I had posted under the topic "Can't Launch Ad-Aware" (see Post #11 for the details about having this issue and what I've tried so far). I have gone through the steps you listed above, but I still have the same problem. When I double-click the Ad-Aware desktop icon, the program does not launch. Do you have any futher suggestions?
For now, due to time constraints, I'm going to uninstall Ad-Aware and install a different antivirus program.0 -
Hi, can you please help me too?
I have the same problem, I followed your instructions but it didn't solve.
Thank you.0 -
Hi jp76,
Have you seen the PM from Ann?0 -
Also have this issue. I have contacted Lavasoft, and they started a case, but was either lost in the queue, or ignored. Not very happy with their tech support right now. Any help would def be appreciated. 0 -
Hello arfles and hammer87,
I will write you in PM. Can you look and answer please?
Thanks,
Ann0 -
These solutions didn't work for me either. I'm running Windows Vista 64-bit. I had uninstalled all other antivirus programs and it still would not open. Please assist! 0 -
Hi arfles,
Have you only done the usual uninstallation or have you also run the special clean-up/removal program that might be necessary to remove everything of your old antivirus program?0 -
Hello Larry J. H.,
I will write you in PM. Can you look and answer please?
Thanks,
Ann0 -
Hi deez11010,
It maybe is not enough to disable other antivirus and similar programs, since they probably have their drivers running anyway. What protections do you have on the computer?0 -
I am also having the same issue. I;ve done the steps in the original post. I have uninstalled, redownloaded and reinstalled several times. I;ve disabled all other protections on my computer while trying to get this to run. Nothing has worked. Please help. I love AdAware and have used it for years. 0 -
I have Avast, Spybot and Windows defender. I dont think I'll be uninstalling any of those just to try out the new version of AdAware. I think I'll just roll back to an older version of AdAware that does work with the programs I already have. 0 -
I've had this problem as well. The reason I need to open the user interface is because Ad-Aware is blocking websites that I know are not malicious such as GetGlue.com. Even after uninstalling this software it is still blocking it. I guess I'm stuck with you so please help me get this going again. 0 -
Yeah, I hope they iron out whatever the conflicts are. I love the program, been using it for so long I feel "naked" without it on my system. I just like to have all the others available too. I'll be using the 9.6 until things are ironed out. 0 -
I understand you and it is probably some kind of conflict between Ad-Aware 10 and Avast or Spybot S&D (specially the TeaTimer function can stop the necessary registry changes). You can download Ad-Aware 9.6 from FileHippo. 0 -
Hi Timmyj01,
Are you sure that you have uninstalled all Ad-Aware programs in Control Panel - Add and remove programs/Programs and features?
Please, report any false positives in the forum http://www.lavasoftsupport.com/index.php?/forum/93-report-a-false-positive/ then Lavasoft can change the definitions.
Do get further help, please run DDS and let us see what is going on in your computer.
Save DDS to your desktop: http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/dds.scr
Double-click on the DDS tool to run it.
When finished, DDS will open two (2) logs:
1. DDS.txt
2. Attach.txt
Save them to your desktop and paste their content into your answer.
When you have done that I will move your posts to a new topic to leave this topic for posts around its title.0 -
As far as I know Ad-Aware is uninstalled on my computer completely. It does not show up in "Programs and Features".

I am a long time AdAware user, and my subscription recently ran out so I've tried to download the free version and have had nothing but problems with the installation. First of all, it always fails the first time, I hit 'retry' and it typically installs from there. Last week, after much frustration with the installation I uninstalled the application and gave up for a few days. Today, I reinstalled the free version and cannot get it to launch. I have no other anti virus software running. I tried the Task Manager option but it did not work and the instructions at the command prompt are confusing. My husband recently installed the same version and is having no issues. What is the possible solution to fixing this on my computer? I have never experienced these type of issues and am about to uninstall AdAware for good as I am completely frustrated with this recent string of events. Please help! 0 -
Hi danhasmail,
Ad-Aware 9 Free has a limited real-time protection while Ad-Aware 10.1 Free has full real-time protection. Therefore it is not recommended to run Ad-Aware 10.1 together with Norton, see LS Digger Barnes' explanation about possible conflicts with other security programs in the post http://www.lavasofts...ndpost&p=125582 It is written for Ad-Aware 9 Pro but the principle is still the same.
I suggest that you continue with Ad-Aware 9.6, which can be downloaded from FileHippo.0 -
Hello, I am also having problems with adaware10.1. not loading.
I got fed up and finally tried to start from scratch by uninstalling ad-aware and removing all traces of it by deleting any mention of it in windows explorer. I also used 2 registry programs to remove it from the registry. I then edited the registry myself (which i do know how to do) and removed any mention of adaware. I restarted the computer tried again with the same outcome, adaware downloads then installs then downloads definitions and tells me to reboot. I do that but nothing happens when the computer is all booted up, it doesn't run a scan and there is no icon in the lower right corner like there used to be. There is a desktop icon but it won't load adaware.
I do have norton anti virus but norton ran fine with it in other versions of adaware as long as I disabled real time protection. and even if I didn't the only problem that would occur is that the computer would run slow.
It seems to me that I had this same problem once before with a new version of adaware, but I don't remember what I had to do to fix it.
HELP0 -
I'm having the same problem.

Hi jarsue97,
Have you restarted the computer again?
Did you install, uninstall or update any program yesterday?

Hi Dennis Mullins,
Uninstall DictionaryBoss, see http://www.systemlookup.com/CLSID/73446-v4bar_dll.html and http://www.mywot.com/en/scorecard/dictionaryboss.com
Did you get any error messages during the installation of Ad-Aware?
Please, try to install Ad-Aware again.0 -
Hi spindle32,
Please, describe your problem in detail.
Which version of Ad-Aware have you installed?
Which Windows do you have, including 32 or 64 bits?
Do you have another antivirus program or similar program installed?
I have seen other persons receiving refunds when they can't run Ad-Aware, but that have of course been immediately and not after a year.
P.S. Note I'm a volunteer here and not employed by Lavasoft.

I cannot actually follow what you want me to do (op). can you repost it because it makes no sense?
I haven't been able to use adaware in a year and tried to contact support via email before when I had a license (which was totally wasted!).
I had entirely given-up and you swallowed my money so I am upset with the service. I am giving you guys one more chance to help me or i will never use adaware again.

I actually wasn't looking for a refund, just to get it to work now, It doesn't matter as I will never buy a licensed copy again.
However, I am running a 64bit windows 7 with current SP/updates. I have re-installed adaware 500,000 times (I hope it is the latest version by now) and I have malware bytes, advanced systemcare and avast running. Please note when I had a license and it never worked I only had Norton on the pc. As far as in detail it is simple when I click on Adaware it doesn't do anything.
