Perpetual Reboot after AdAware 10 "Upgrde"
Just about 2 months ago I attempted to upgrade to Ad-Aware 10.x. The results were disasterous - I've not been able to use my laptop since then, but due to time constraints I'm just now getting around to trying to sort things out.
Machine is a Dell Latitude D630 running updated version of XP
Here's what occurs when I power up. POST works fine and XP begins to load. The initial "Preparing network connections...." message cycles through fine, and then I briefly get the "Insert card or Press Ctrl-Alt-Delete..." message for a second or two before immediately getting a small blue-screen with a lengthy message. After a couple seconds of that, a full re-boot occurs and the whole cycle repeats. It would do this all day long of I left the machine on.
Here's the meat of the error message I got while blue-screened....
A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to protect your computer.
No_More_TRP_Stack_Locations
I've run the internal diagostic on the machine, and everything tested fine as I suspected. There's no doubt at all that the 10.0 upgrade is the cause, or at least the catalyst to this problem.
Of course I don't have a recovery disk. I do have a means to remove the drive and access it from another machine if there's something I can do in that regard to at least get the system to boot.
Appreciate any guidance.

Do you have another antivirus program installed? That is the most common reason for serious problems after installation of Ad-Aware 10.
I suggest that you start Windows in Safe mode by tapping F8 key repeatedly during the start and selecting [b]Safe mode[/b] in the menu, see [url="http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-us/boot_failsafe.mspx"]http://www.microsoft...t_failsafe.mspx[/url]. Thanks for the response Cecilia. I do have MSE installed and running on the D630. Thinking I need to pick one or the other?

Yes, either Ad-Aware 10 or MSE. Personally I think your computer is better protected with Ad-Aware 10, but the decision is yours.
Another possible solution, that probably is easier if it works, is to do a system restore to a date before the installation of Ad-Aware in safe mode.

I'll answer my own question here. Indeed it does appear that the roll-back was permanent, and upon re-boot everything sorta came up normally - I did encounter a lock-up that required a hard reset, but on "re-re-boot" things seemed more stabe. I was then able to uninstall Adaware 10 using the "regular" built-in uninstaller and that seemed to go fine. I presume there's no reason to do anything further at this point - no residual stuff hanging on I should be concerned with?0 -

Thanks Cecilia- I was able to boot-up by selecting the option of running the last known good start-up, or whatever that option is called from the safe-mode start-up screen. So it's not really in safe mode right now - just sorta rolled-back I guess.
But I'm not sure now if that permanently rolled it back, or just for the currently executed start-up. Just wondering if I still need to execute the restore instructions you've suggested above, or if it's already happened auto-magically by making the selection I did. Again, appreciate your help here very much.

Double-click on the DDS tool to run it.

Thanks for the ongoing help Cecilia. I didn't get past the first instruction above. Am I supposed to be entering the same exact command twice?
I went ahead and executed it any way. First time I get a status of the service indicating it is in a "stopped" state.
Executing it right away again, I get the following message:

It actually is NOT necessary to have those sites as trusted any more (old employer). The only possible caveat, and I don't think it's an issue, but when I first logon I have to select the "NetIQUS" domain, even though I'm not really connecting to it - I'm just logging into my laptop. If I try to logon to "this computer" I get a password error. I imagine there's a way to "fix" this, I've just never bothered since it doesn't effect anything.
Any way, I don't think this would be a factor in what you're going to suggest, but just figured I'd point it out in case I'm figuring wrong. And while it's a little off-track for this thread/forum, if you have suggestions on how to change my logon so it's just my personal one, feel free. /smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />0 -

Okay, reset that line in Firefox and deleted the web sites from trusted zones in IE.
The only lingering issue I have is that none of my USB ports work. I can't be certain that it's in any way tied to the Ad-Aware upgrade, but it did seem to occur at the same time. I don't think we're going to solve that here (unless there is some known issue), but I'll provide a link to a tech forum where I've been trying to solve that just in case someone else comes across the same problem.... http://forums.techguy.org/hardware/1060670-usb-ports-no-longer-recognized.html0 -

A thumb-drive and camera is what I've been using to test for USB connectivity after I try something. Dead as a doorstop in all instances.
Oddly, I wasn't able to see the inf folder using Explorer, but doing a search for the file it does let me in to a folder called inf and indeed there is a file there called usbstor.inf. Here's is the contents...

Don't spend too much time studying the above dump. In the mean time I found what was supposed to be an original copy of the file contents so I saved that out in place of what was there, full shut-down and re-start.... Same story, nothing from my USB ports. 0 -
Sorry, I don't know how to interpret that file. It was only to help you continue in the other forum. If nothing turns up in Device Manager when you connect an USB device, it is possible that is a hardware fault. 0 -

I can't imagine that it's a hardware fault Cecilia. Between the two on the docking station and the two on the laptop itself, I've got FOUR USB ports. They all worked previously; now none of them work. I'm getting close to just giving up.0 -

Okay, first the short version... I went to the Dell site and was able to download and run Notebook System Software, as suggested on page 13 as referenced above. Shut down, booted up, no change.
Longer version - two things...
1) Although I was able to download and install NSS, I did have one odd error message along the way...
16 bit MS-DOS Subsystem

C:\PROGRA~1\\Symantec\S32EVNT1.DLL An installable Virtual Device Driver failed Dll initialization. Choose "Close" to terminate the application
I initially thought it was going to stop right there, but I was able to continue along after that and everything seemed to go fine.
2)Going to the Dell support site, you are able to enter either your service tag# and/or execute an auto-detect from the Dell site. Either way, you are then prompted to "Initilize the Dell Driver Analyze Utility", which I did (a few times now).
The utility briefly runs until displaying this message...

Apparently there was/is, though I don't recall that being the case. I did go through the uninstall process, but that same error message persisted when I ran Dell NSS.0 -

Thanks very much for the ideas Peter. I just went through everything from the above link. The first 3 "easy fixes" were of no use. Some of them I had done before, but I went through all three any way.
So then I go to this one, the more "advanced" one...
This section is intended for an advanced computer user.
You can disable the USB Selective Suspend feature as a workaround by editing the registry. The USB device may become unresponsive because of a race condition in the Selective Suspend feature. The Selective Suspend feature suspends the USB device to efficiently maintain battery power by enabling the computer to turn off the USB device. However, sometimes this feature may not correctly wake up the USB device. Therefore, the USB device is unresponsive when you try to use it.
You might want to disable this feature for server products where power management is not important or required.

Note step 3. I am able to navigate all the way down to the Services directory, but there is no file or directory under that named simply "USB". There are eight sub-directories starting out "USB....", but neither a file or directory named USB.
I don't know if this is significant or not.
I'll stop here and maybe look into some of your other suggestions tomorrow Peter, unless this turns out to be our smoking gun.0 -
Brad, just be very careful with the registry. One mistake can corrupt it. The other problem could be a corruption of one of your system file/s. Have you run " sfc /scannow " without the quotes from your run position in XP? The inf file that you touched is part of your hidden system files and may be corrupt.
I have attached two (2) files. One is a snapshot of my registry residing on my XP machine and shows the USB registry entries. The other one is a text file which is the actual entry of the USB entry in the registry. If you are confident you can change the file extension from 'txt' to 'reg' and you are then able to copy it into your registry by double clicking on it. That is your decision and I can't guarantee a fix.
