I don't think I'm getting new definitions.
I have been using Ad-Aware 6, build 6.181 for years. I have also followed all the steps in: pinned: Ad-Aware Definition Update Problems. What I have in my Lavasoft\Ad-aware 6 folder is a defs.ref file and a reflist.ref file. The defs.ref file is up to date because I updated it manually but the reflist file is dated Oct. 26 2004. Ad-aware shows this reference file as the one loaded when it starts up.
Now that you know what I have, here's my problem. When I check for updates I am always told that there are no new updates available. Since my host file shows no reference to Ad-aware, and I run several spyware protection and removal programs, I doubt that anything is blocking my updates. Plus, a computer store installed the free version of Ad-aware SE last week when they had to re-install Windows XP, and it updates just fine!
Why is my ref file two years out of date? Why must I do manual updates of the def file? Why is there no ref file in Ad-aware SE free?
Does anyone have any help? Sorry this is so long.

Hi jetjock,
I have been using Ad-Aware 6, build 6.181 for years.
That version is well out-of-date.
Please downlod the current Build from here: Ad-aware SE Build 106r1
(You will heed to uninstall your old Ad-aware first, then install SE)
Should you encounter any problems when uninstalling, please see this post in the Lavasoft Support Forums > FAQ's > Ad-Aware SE > Technical section of the forum:
I Am Unable To Uninstall My Ad-aware Program. I Get The Message "can't Find Install.log"
Once SE is installed, use the WebUpDate to get the latest Definition file SE1R124 19.09.2006
To do this Open Ad-aware, click the WebUpDate button at the top right hand side of the Ad-aware screen (The world globe). Click "Connect"
Ad-aware will then download the latest Definition file for you.
To make sure it is updated , look at the main Ad-aware screen, and look under "Initialization Status"
It should say the Latest Definition file.
Then scan doing a "Full Scan", to make sure that your system is clean
Regards,
Spike
