The new 8.1.1 takes 45 seconds to 1 minute to load
Well the lava soft people have managed to screw up this software AGAIN. I am using a Compaq presario 2.16 GHz with AMD Athlon 3000 with 2 GHz memory running windows XP service pack 3. The previous Anniversary Edition of Ad-Aware took maybe 10 seconds to load but this new version 8.1.1 takes from 45 seconds to 1 minute or more to load, and I am using the Pro version. I wish when the lavasoft people write upgrades or new versions they would stop messing up this software. It hasn't been many version back when it took forever to update for example I am on dsl with 3Mb and it would take sometimes 5 minutes to update. I never purchased the product until they got it fixed with the Anniversary Edition but now they seem to be reverting back to causing problems. Has anyone made them aware of this problem. It seems that I am not the only person have this problem. Would appreciate any help.

Yep, I will definitely report this now. I and others have experienced it.Casey
Thank you very much !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Also, since you're using pro you can contact support, via the support center, to ask them about this too.

Yes thank you, I did do that!
I have used Ad-Aware for years and I hate to see such as this happen to it.

Even when Ad-Aware/Adwatch is not starting together with Windows my computer take a lot more time to get ready.
But that was already the case before...reason why I only used Ad-Aware once a week.
I have also installed on my PC differend Norton products (NIS NSW Ghost).

I have used Ad-Aware for several years and have run into several problems along the way that seemed to take forever to get the programmers to fix. I used the FREE version for a couple of years but started feeling guilty because I know it takes time and money to maintain a good software program so I decided to purchase the Anniversary Edition as it seemed to be a very stable program without any bugs on my computer. The version before Anniversary Edition took a long time to update in fact so long that I stopped using it until they finally got if fixed. Now we come along and they wanted us to upgrade a smooth running Anniversary Edition with Version 8.1.1. Now I have to sit here and wait an entire minute for this program to load which is absolutely unacceptable. Now what makes this annoying to me is the following email the support team sent me: (The startup process can be slow at times depending on your hardware and the software you have installed on your computer but we are working on making the process as fast as possible) well I had the same hardware and software installed when running the Anniversary Edition and it didn't take a minute to load DUH. In the future if they are going to write an upgrade maybe it would be a good idea if they make sure not to go backwards. I am giving them another week to get this problem solved then I will go back to the Anniversary Edition and when my subscription is up bye bye Ad-Aware. Just my opinion folks.

Well I'm glad you got a response (I haven't ) and at least it means they are working on the problem. I know it's frustrating, believe me.
My personal experience was that before Lavasoft introduced the loading banner way back in 8.0.3 (I think) Ad-Aware AE loaded instantly. Then along came the banner and it took a few seconds to load which I was fine with. But in the recent 8.1 (and I'm sure it didn't happen during the beta) I do have to wait a good 15s for it to load.
I'm not sure what has changed to make this change and whilst my experience isn't as bad as yours, for example, it is still noticeable.
Anyway, lets hope something can be done

Oh I meant to say I would be delighted to get the load time down to 15 seconds like yours.

Well I have stated what I am going to do. After one more week of this BS I am going back to Anniversary Edition and when my subscription runs out I am going to purchase another program. Hell it took 6 months or more for them to fix the download problem in the version before Anniversary Edition so I don't expect to see it fixed any time soon.

Bull! I have an i7 @ 3.6Ghz, 12GB of ram, and a dedicated 1GB graphics card and it still takes longer than 15 seconds to load! It is, by far, the slowest program to load on my system. I have to agree with the assessment relative to AE. AE ran like a deer. This version runs like a pig. No excuses for slower performance without a whole lot of added features or functionality.
I know this is a rant, but it can't be too difficult to fix this. There are either a ton of dead-end calls or this is simply the most inefficient coding job I've ever encountered. Regardless, the code authors and, especially, editors are either clueless or careless. Either way, they need to be thoroughly dressed down and then sacked for this allowing this garbage to hit the streets.
Counterpoints welcome... :

Not quite. My anecdotal evidence is a ~15 load time and those are my specs.Anyway, I do agree that there is something wrong here and there must be room for optimization - so we will wait to see what Lavasoft come up with.
Casey
I'd love to know your setup to get this to load in under 15 seconds. I have several systems running this and the load times are as follows (keep in mind I do not have the Ad-Watch module loading on start-up or even installed on any of these systems):
2.4Ghz P4, 2GB RAM, 256mb video card, XP SP3: 52-58 seconds
3.4Ghz (3.6o/c) P4, 4GB RAM, 512mb video card, XP SP3: 42-47 seconds
2.66 (3.33 o/c) QX6700, 4GB RAM, 1GB video card, XP SP3: 18-21 seconds
2.66 (3.6 o/c) i7, 12GB RAM, 1GB video card, Vista64: 16-18 seconds
The thing that really burns me is that even with the 2 program processes already running (the tray icon is now visible), this hog still takes a looonnnggg time to bring up the update/scan interface. With AE, once the 2 system processes were loaded into memory, the update/scan interface was nearly instantaneous when called.
I don't see where this version is doing anything that AE wasn't doing...it's just taking a helluva lot longer to do it!
Come on guys....I know you can do better!!!
Again, counterpoints welcome...

The only way I can get a really long delay is when I have the Lavasoft Ad-Aware Service turned off.
If I then open the Ad-Aware GUI it takes about ~50-60s for the program to open. Perhaps this is the case in your set-ups, what is the status of the service before you open the GUI?

As with all the software that I use for a specific reason only at specific times (including the previous AE), I do not allow automatic loading of the program's services at start-up. Only my anti-vrus, firewall, graphics drivers, and a few other monitoring and interactive programs are granted that privilege.
As I said earlier, even after the two services are started, it still takes an inordinate amount of time to load the interface, anywhere from 7 to 40 seconds, depending on the system. If the two services were already running using AE, the interface would load in less than 2 seconds on the QX6700 and it was virtually instananeous on the i7.

Ok, well again this my anecdotal evidence, I found that when the service is turned off before opening the GUI:
That it takes about 10-15s for the GUI to turn on the service (I can tell this by the status change of the service in Window's services display) and then after this it takes a further 40s or so for the GUI to open. I have added this to the earlier bug report since this is something which obviously needs fixing.
There is no reason, that I can see, why there should be such a delay after the service has been started to when the GUI loads - it should take the same time as when the service is automatically running to open the GUI - i.e. for me, it should take:
~10s to start the service
~15s to then open the GUI
= total ~25s to open Ad-Aware from scratch NOT ~50-60s

Since I upgraded to the new version 8.1.1 there is a problem with
launching it. It takes 50 seconds to load and if I do an update it takes
and additional 105 seconds. In total before I can begin a scan from the
moment of clicking the Ad-Aware icon, I have to wait 2 1/2 minutes. The
old version never had this problem. Any suggestions??
My computer runs Windows XP SP3 with 1.5 GB Ram and is fast.
Lavasoft said support if only for paid users. With such a slow poke piece of software, who will buy it.

I agree with all the previous posts regarding slow start-up. I also experience a very slow response time after opening my browser (Mozilla Firefox) and then getting any tab to open. Shutting down Ad-Aware 8.1.1 solves this problem. So I know whose fault it is.

Not necessarily Ad-Aware - do you have other real-time protection running? I had a similar problem when I had Ad-Aware, AVG, Spybot, and Windows Defender all running resident protection. System was much snappier once I turned off everything except Ad-Aware (albeit I'm still using Ad-Aware AE).

Hi all, This is my first post. After reading the loading problems, I agree it's Slow but, I get an average of 15 to 20 seconds load time with just a 1.8 Ghz AMD processor, running XP Home, 2 GBytes memory, using the on-board video chip set ie., No extra Video card. I've got Outpost Pro, ESET's NOD A/V4, Secunia's PSI, SpyBot S&D and FF 3.5.5 running together with the usual XP processes. It's tweaked up a bit but, nothing special. atlatl 0 -
The catch 22 in this matter only reflect poorly on Lavasoft. If they think that people will buy their Ad-Aware software after they can see and read that it takes for ever to load and run, they are less smart than I thought.
Since Lavasoft is not responding nor fixing their problem and I don't have the time to sit around and wait for it to launch, can anyone recommend another Antispyware program that runs good and is good?
thanks0 -
Hi guys. Well, I have been pretty vocal concerning the slow load times experienced using the new 8.1.x as compared to the previous AE version.
I was experiencing load times of 17-19 seconds on an i7 system with 12GB ram, which was stupid long when all things are considered.
However, after loading all the updates available as of the date of this post, my load times have DROPPED to a more reasonable 12-13 seconds on this system. I can't speak for other configurations.
Perhaps they have addressed some of the issues. If so, KUDOS to Lavasoft.0 -

See you said the MAGIC WORDS "albeit I'm still using Ad-Aware AE" Their is not a problem in AE it is a very fine program.
The pinheads at Lavasoft don't give a D*mn about a paying customer so how can they care about a free customer.0 -
That Anniversary Edition scanned my registries with out locking up. This version locks up when scanning my registries and is slow on load up when Windows is starting up. /mad.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> 0 -
I never got a reply from Lavasoft about the intolerable slow poke loading of Ad-Aware. So I got fed up and uninstalled it. I am now looking for another antispyware that at least loads in reasonable time, not 2.5 minutes. Anybody has experience with other softwares that are good. Thanks... 0 -
The funny thing here is I am NOT HAVING any of the problems that I read about here on the forum. I had NO trouble installing version 8.1, I am having NO problems updating it, I have NO problems running scans, the problem I do have is IT TAKES 50 - 60 SECONDS TO LOAD THIS STUPID THING. The anniversary edition was not that way. Now for those of you that may be wondering about my system here it is. I have a compaq presario with AMD Athlon 3000 XP processor running at 2.16 GHz. I am using Windows XP Home edition with SP3, using 2 Gb of ram. The ONLY thing I load at bootup is AVG anti virus version 9 and Online Armor. I use a program called Easy Cleaner to keep the registry clean and to keep unnecessary files(temp internet and etc) off the disk. I keep the disk defragged on a regular basis. So in a nut shell what I am saying is why are more people not experiencing this slow loading problem. I think maybe on the newer dual core processors it may not take that long and also people may be loading Ad-Adware at bootup and don't notice how long it takes to load. I purchased the Anniversary Edition Pro and was loading it and using the Ad-Watch but since this stupid version I disabled the Ad-Watch and don't load Ad-Aware at bootup. I run the thing once or twice a week but usually don't find anything. I am using a router and using AVG and Online Armor so I am pretty safe. Sometimes the Ad-Aware finds a few tracking cookies but heck it did when I was running the Ad-Watch so I still had to run scans. If you are having slow loading problems would some one help me fuss about this. I keep complaining to the Ad-Aware customer support but it seems to do NO GOOD. 0 -
Hey, can someone tell me if they are planning on fixing this thing so us people that are running slower processors (I mean not the dual core processors) can load it in less than a minute. I am not having ANY other problems except it takes forever to load. You would think that if they are smart enough to write the program they could fix it like the Anniversary Edition which worked excellent. Why do they just ignore problems like this? 0 -

No official word yet from Lavasoft. Leroy, this is the 2nd time you've started a new topic on slow loading where I've merged it with your original post. With any ongoing issues, please reply to the original topic rather than starting a new one - it helps keep the board clean and makes less work for the volunteers /smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' /> If you prefer to not scan the index page, you can click on your user name and find your posts on your user profile. Hi:
Since upgrading to 8.1 , the program loads VERY slow. I removed all entries from startup using msconfig , and also prevented the program from loading automatically on startup. But still takes long time to load. Is there a fix available?
Thanks
