Oh for the good old days when help was forthcomming and it was unheard of to not get any response to a polite request for Help, but still I suppose this is life today.
Pity.

Hi kenb,
To assist with pinpointing your installation problem, would you please supply the following information:
1) What is your OS?
2) What other security software do you have running (eg: anti-virus, anti-malware, firewall...)
3) Are you using the Free version, or the licensed Plus/Pro?
Regards,
Spike

Hello spike-nz,
Thanks for your response.
1) Windows XP
2) Zonelabs Security Suite.
3) Licenced Plus.
I have sought help from Lavasoft Support and after some delay was suggested I could have accidently damaged my file association.
The things I was told to try was frightening to a 72 year old gentlemen and would probably have spent the remaining years in total confusion.
If you think you can help in any way it would be appreciated,
but if not I will understand.

KenB.

Hi Ken,
The things I was told to try was frightening to a 72 year old gentlemen and would probably have spent the remaining years in total confusion
I started both of my parents on computing in their 70's - they are both now in their 80's and ask me questions pretty well every day (usually over the phone, which makes it that little bit more complicated...).
To start with, would you please copy/paste the information/instructions that Support gave you into your reply. Once we have those, we can take it from there.
I'm not an "uber-geek", so it may be instructional for both of us

Hi KenB,
Interesting email from Support - apart from the fact that you are unable to run AAW 2007, what other (if any) symptoms did you include in your request to Support that would have made them suspect problems with your file associations?
Have you tried opening various types of files/programs as well as clicking on any desktop icons (which are basically links to open programs)? When you do this, do the links open the desired program and do the programs work as normal?
Another item to check would be to use Windows Explorer to navigate to and find, say, a picture file. When you double-click on it, does your usual picture-viewing software open and display the picture?
Basically, have you detected anything unusual about the way you open and run your usual programs?

Spike

Dear Sir/Madam
I believe you have accidentally damaged your file associations.
Ad-Watch has a watch dog function that protects your registry, it will
react if the registry is changing.
If you run one of your programs (free from malicious software) it will
sometimes change the registry (a perfect normal thing)
Ad-Watch can not know if the change is involuntary (from malware) or
necessary (from your program).
If you press "block" when your program is changing the registry,
sometimes your link files can be damaged.
*http://www.dougknox.com/ (Win XP fixes) and "LNK (Shortcut) File
Association Fix" (Restores Default Shortcut Behavior)
Is a great tool to restore your shortcuts. Go to 'Win XP Fixes' -> 'File
associations fixes'
Please try the LNK-fix, which is this one:
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/fileassoc/linkfile_fix.zip
If that doesn't help try the .exe fix on the same page:
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/fileassoc/xp_exe_fix.zip
Download the ZIP and open it. Extract the REG file to your hard disk and
double click it.
Answer yes to the import prompt. REG files can be viewed in Notepad.
Each of the REG files contains the default settings for the file
extension indicated.
NOTE: If your EXE file associations are corrupted, it can be difficult
to open REGEDIT, or to even import REG files.
To work around this, press CTRL-ALT-DEL and open Task Manager.
Once there, click File, then hold down the CTRL key and click New Task
(Run).
This will open a Command Prompt window.
Enter REGEDIT.EXE and press Enter.
*You can also try using System Restore, which rolls back your computer
settings to the date you wish.
You can read about using system restore here:

Make sure to enable (green) 'On detection only' under Notifications in

Hi Spike,
My explanation to support may not have been particularly explicit, but apart from not being able to open AAW 2007 the only other thing I have tried is system restore which fails to work.

Hi Ken,
So the only actual problem that you are have is not being able to re-install, register and run Ad-Aware 2007 Plus?
You are experiencing no other problems or unusual behaviour with your computer?
After you un-installed AAW 2007 Plus, did you make any hardware changes (ie: new components for your computer)?
(By the way, once AAW 2007 Plus is installed, there is a "Register" button for entering your serial number - we'll get to that later).

Spike

Hi Ken,
When you added the HP printer (and before trying the "solution" which required changing between IE7 & IE6) did you check AAW 2007 Plus to see whether there were any conflicts, by running a scan?
With System Restore, switching from IE7 (where most/all of your Restore Points would have been made) to IE6 (which has its own System Restore) and then back again, may well have compromised your existing System Restore Points. I'm no Windows expert but knowing the vagaries of Windows, I would suspect that this may well be the cause of that problem. To get it running again, you may have to turn it off (clearing the old Restore Points) and then re-enabling it so that it will run as intended again.
1) However, before we do that, would you please clarify "The only things I have noticed not working are system restore" - when you try and roll-back to an earlier Restore point, do you get an Error Message, or does the program malfunction, or does it appear to work but then tell you that "no changes have been made" (which is a common and annoying response )?
2) Next, when you firstly removed IE7 and then in turn IE6, did you use "Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs", or were any of these installations simply made over the top of an existing one?
3) Next, I would suggest uninstalling the HP Printer for now. It should be listed in "Add/Remove Programs (make sure to disconnect and unplug the printer first) - then check "Start > Settings > Control Panel > Printers & Faxes" and if the printer still shows, right-click on it and delete. We can reinstall it when your other problems have been sorted out.
4) Finally, uninstall AAW 2007 Plus either through "Start > Programs > Lavasoft > AAW 2007 > Uninstall AAW 2007" or through Add/Remove Programs. Then, please download the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility from here and run that. In the list of programs detected by the WICU, locate any reference to Ad-Aware and select it, then click on "Remove". (We want to work from a "clean slate"...).
Once you have clarified my questions and performed the uninstallation/cleanup that I have suggested, please post back.
Regards,
Spike

Hi Spike,
Sorry for the delay in replying to your last but I have been away for a few days. If I can explain exactly what happened it may make things a bit clearer.
Firstly I added a hp psc 2410 photosmart all in one printer to my system this according to another forum conflicts with I.E. 7. which stops H.P. Director from opening. The solution to this I was informed was remove ie7 and instal ie6, this I tried and Yes you've guessed it made no difference.
After reinstalling ie 7 I noticed AAW 2007 not opening.
I can't be sure if it stopped before this point as I was at a loss what to try next. The next thing I tried was system restore but after several attempts this was impossible to carry out.
The only things I have noticed not working are system restore, printer software H.P. Director and AAW 2007 Plus which includes Adwatch.
Hoping you can make sense of this explanation,
Regards KenB.

Hi Spike,
Removed AAW 2007 and thought I would try AAW SE Plus, this installed and worked faultlessly including Ad-Watch.
How can this be? If AAW SE Plus works O.K and as long as I can receive updates this might be the solution. I'll await your comments.
KenB
Seems to be a problem with answers duplicating.Sorry if this was my fault but I seem to be having a bad time at the moment

Hello Spike,
I will answer your questions in order.
(1) System Restore as you said appeared to work but informed me "no changes have been made"
(2) IE7 was removed before installing IE6 and likewise when IE7 was reinstalled.
(3) HP Printer software totally removed.
(4) Cleared all traces of AAW and HP software using WICU.
Await futher instructions,
Regards, KenB.

Hi Ken,
thought I would try AAW SE Plus, this installed and worked faultlessly including Ad-Watch. How can this be?
AAW SE and AAW 2007 are completely different animals - AAW 2007 is a "service-based" program, as explained by LS Tobias here:
Something that is worth pointing out from the onset is that of the two parts that make up Ad-Aware 2007 - aawservice.exe and Ad-Aware 2007.exe - it is the service that is the very heart of the application. It carries out the scans and removals of infections - Ad-Aware 2007.exe is only a Graphical User Interface that allows the user to control the functionality of the service. The reasons for using a service-based approach for Ad-Aware 2007 are many. A service implementation allows for modularity and scalability in the implementation. Using a service also gives the engine the elevated rights on the system, which is an absolute necessity in order to cope with the malware of today. An added bonus is that the service operates with these elevated rights even when you are logged in as a normal user which gives you an enhanced protection against malware simply because that they are forced to execute in user mode.
Given that the two versions of AAW operate in different ways, it is not unusual for AAW SE (a simpler approach) to work, where AAW 2007 (more advanced and requiring higher privileges) may encounter some teething problems. I still think that we should persevere with AAW 2007 Plus, as support for AAW SE (ie: Defs files) will cease in the next few months.
If you could try the uninstallation/cleanup that I have suggested and answer my questions above, that would give a much clearer picture of where we stand.
Alternatively, you may wish to remain with AAW SE Plus for now - however, that won't sort out either your printer or your System Restore problems.
Regards,
Spike
PS: I have removed the duplicate posts for you - happens quite often

Hi Ken,
System Restore as you said appeared to work but informed me "no changes have been made"
All too common and the main reason why I do not use it, personally. Being told that "no changes have been made" when I know that some should have been, does nothing for my blood pressure... I now have an external hard-drive and back up my system regularly, using disk-imaging software.
As to the rest of my questions, thank you for the clear and concise answers.
You mentioned a post in another forum which led you to believe that IE7 stops H.P. Director from opening. If that is the case, it will be a separate matter to address once AAW 2007 Plus is running as intended.
Now that your system has been cleared using WICU, lets try reinstalling AAW 2007 Plus. To make sure that you have the latest version (7.0.2.3), please log in to the Support Center using your email address and the password created during the purchase/registration process (there is a "forgotten password" link). Inside, under the "Your Licenses" tab, there will be a link to download AAW 2007 Plus. Save it to your usual downloads location and then install it.
Once installed, open Ad-Aware and on the main Status window, in the section named "License Status", click on "Register". In the drop-down menu which appears, select the correct license type and duration, then type in (not copy/paste) your Serial number which was included in your purchase confirmation email. The same email will have instructions on which option to select:
Chose your settings for AAW 2007 Plus, including Ad-Watch (such as set Ad-Watch to start minimised at system start-up).
Then try scanning again, using all three options (Smart, Full & Custom). Please post back with results.

Spike

Hi Spike,
Carried out instructions to the point where Itried to open AAW 2007 from desktop Icon and low and behold nothing happened.
After uttering a few curses tried the whole process again with the same success.
Where to now Pal,

Hi Ken,
If AAW 2007 worked before your exchange between IE6 & IE7 and then back again, and given that you have removed all traces using the WICU, this is strange behaviour... especially since you are reportedly not receiving any error messages.
After uttering a few curses
Boy, do I know that feeling...
Would you please go to "Start > Run" and type in services.msc
Locate the AAW 2007 Service (usually the first in the list) and see if it is running (ie: started) - if not, click on "Start":
Then try re-loading AAW 2007 from the Icon - the Service has to be running for the program to load.
Regards,
Spike

Hi Ken,
I apologise if my last comment was inappropriate
No problem, I appreciate what you must be experiencing right now.
Please repeat the services.msc instructions. This time, right-click on the Service and select "Properties" and Select the "Log On" tab:
Make sure that the "Allow service to interact with desktop" box is selected (ticked) then click "OK".
Then, change the Service Start-up type from Automatic to Manual:
Re-boot your system, run the services.msc instructions and click on Start. The try opening AAW 2007.
Please advise whether the program will start/scan under a manual Service startup.
Regards,
Spike

Hello Spike,
At the moment I am devoid of any aaw2007 on my computer, do I need to reinstall to test your last theory.
I have managed to get a fix from H.P. for my printer which is now up and running and functioning 100%.
Reading other threads in this forum it certainly looks as if Lavasoft are having minor glitches in aaw 2007 and I'm beginning to wonder if I should consider something different untill all the problems have been ironed out and everything is working like S.E. and previous editions of Ad-Aware, for so long.
Your comments appreciated.

Hi Spike'
Since my last, I thought of giving it another go and have installed it all again and carried out your last instructions, switched to manual start and attempted to start from the alternative start. although it shows as started and running nothing shows on the desktop.
Awaiting your comments,
Ken.

Hi,
There is a lot of info in this thread so apologies if I repeat what has already been tried. From the above you have resolved the HP printer and Internet Explorer 7 problems but Ad-Aware 2007 still will not start.
1) Is there an Ad-Aware 2007 icon on the desk top? If so when you double left click on this what happens?
2) If the above fails right mouse click on the Ad-Aware 2007 icon and select open. What happens?
3) If both the Ad-Aware 2007 icon methods fail try lauching directly. Open Windows Explorer and navigate to c:\program files\lavasoft\ad-aware 2007 (It may prompt you that these are hidden files, if so confirm that you wish to view these files)
In that folder there will be several files, double click on Ad-Aware2007.exe, does this launch or give any error messages?
Many thanks

Hi Ken,
I'm beginning to wonder if I should consider something different untill all the problems have been ironed out
I think that this is getting a little bit too complicated...
I have asked for assistance from above (I still have an uncomfortable feeling about that switch from IE7 to IE 6 and back - nothing concrete, just a niggle...).
Please bear with me for now.

Spike

Hi
Can you right mouse click on the desktop icon for Ad-Aware 2007, then select "Properties". In the Window that opens make sure you are on the Shortcut tab (it should open at this, it not click on the tab labeled "Shortcut").
This Window has some useful info. Could you post back with what is displayed against these entries please:
Target:
Start in:
Run:
Many thanks

Hello Ad Astra
Thanks for your offer of help, In answer to your questions everything appears to be normal with AAW 2007 except all attempts to launch it seem to fail.
Icons on desktop are there left and right clicks appear to be opening it but nothing appears, All ways you have suggested have been tried and as you will see in earlier entry's everything shows as started and running except no error warning and no picture on desktop.
Hope this Helps,
Ken.

Hi
There are a few oddities there but not the one I thought may be at fault. Can you check if there is a typo in your reply, if it is exactly as typed there are some errors in the icon details, but these are mostly likely a typo.
For target: it should read
"C:\program files\lavasoft\ad-aware 2007\ad-aware2007.exe"
Note:
the colon after "C:\
the extra space in \ad-aware 2007\
the dot in ad-aware2007.exe
the postion of the quote marks ""
For Start in: it should read
"C:\program files\lavasoft\ad-aware 2007\"
Note:
the colon after "C:\
the extra space in \ad-aware 2007\
Please try lauching Ad-Aware 2007 this way.
Click start, select run and in the box enter the following text, you could cut & paste the text in bold below, then press the ok button. Does anything start now?
"C:\program files\lavasoft\ad-aware 2007\ad-aware2007.exe"

Typing errors were as described(sorry about that) cut and pasted your instruction and run. After everything calmed down no change nothing had opened.
Thanks again for your time,
Ken.

Hi
Could you post back if you have XP Professional or XP Home please. I would like to check the file ownership, as I only have XP Pro I would need to do some investigating on how to do this on XP Home if you are running this.
Also could you post back with a directory listing of C:\program files\lavasoft\ad-aware 2007\ folder please.
A quickish way to do this is to Click start, select run and then enter the text in bold below, then press the ok button.
cmd.exe /c dir "C:\program files\lavasoft\ad-aware 2007\" > C:\aawlisting.txt
The spaces quotes > etc need to be exactly as above so cut and paste is quickest.
This will run the command interrepter (you may see a brief black window appear and disappear) to write out a folder listing to a text file called aawlisting.txt. Next open Windows Explorer and navigate to the root of the C: drive when click on aawlisting.txt to open in Notepad. Then cut and paste the full contents into a reply.
Many thanks
