Web update problem after upgrade to AE (free)
I have just updgraded my PC from adaware 2008 to AE (free). The PC has Vista installed and Norton 360. 2008 was working okay with both. The upgrade worked fine, and I can run a scan, but when trying to do a web update I receive an error message - "Connection error, check your settings". I have changed the firewall for 360 to "allow" for both aawservice and ad-aware but still no success.
Any suggestions as to how to fix this would be appreciated.

Same here I am starting to have worries just like you after running it on the laptop no problem(using the home hub)and updating but on the main desktop with more files on it won't update and that is after I first did restore to the other day and then deleting it by using the add/remove program and then getting it again from CNET(lavasoft preferred third party) I hope it is not the start of daphne2008's problems
This thread seems to have stalled - probably the weekend, but looking at other forum threads I am very concerned that we seem to have a major problem as this AE version seems to be full of holes. Sebastian, I would appreciate your feedback as the update problem is widespread (plus the other threads which identify major hits on system files) and I am getting to the point where after 3 / 4 years with Lavasoft I'm on the verge of getting other systems to look after Spyware - and on that theme - any feedback from others on Malware bytes or PCTools would be much appreciated.

I'm also contending with this issue. Widows Vista 32 bit. The only firewall is the Windows Firewall. Disabling has no affect. Any suggestions are welcome. I've read through numerous forum entries on this issue for Ad-Aware SE, 2008 and now AE with no resolution found.
Thanks for any assistance you have to offer!

@ crazyivan,
i'd suggest allowing all the components of ad-aware through - especially Ad-AwareAdmin
@ bobflick,
has ad-aware recently found any malware infections? is your internet working ok? can you visit this site for a manual download: http://www.lavasoft.com/support/securitycenter/blog/ ?

thanks Casey - but still no joy. The windows firewall is off and 360 is operating. I have now changed all three components (earlier +Ad-AwareAdmin now) to "allow" in norton's firewall settings. Are there any others that are not so obvious?
Other info - the license shows as free with no expiry, web update status shows as ok - just will not let me run it!

i have exactly the same problem. i just get 'connection error, check your settings'. i have Mcafee and all obvious adaware programs have full access.
it has been working fine since it was released and I have not tampered with any settings in my firewall or the program, it has just randomly got this message now and cant update?
any help? i had a similar problem a couple of releases ago which was never resolved?
thanks in advance

please can someone assist? It seems to be a pretty common problem?
I dont wish to make a nuisance of myself, however would an admistrator please kindly reply?
i have reinstalled the program and the auto update runs, then as soon as it restarts my pc and program opens again and i try to run an update I get the error again? Its asif whatever is being updated is causing the problem.
I would be lothed to reinstall the previous version.
Thanks in advance

I have the same problem with updating Ad-aware. The strange thing that the similar program Spybot had the same problem. Is it a virus/spyware doing this?

I have the same problem with the web update not working.
Here is the reply lavasoft gave me:
Ad-Aware will require a stable internet connection in order to update successfully.
Configure (or turn off) your firewall or any other security programs that might block network access.
Your Modem/ Network Router may have a built in Firewall.
If necessary, you can temporarily turn off your firewall, ensure to turn it on again after you have updated Ad-Aware.
For further assistance please contact your Internet Provider, System Administrator, or the vendor of your Firewall.
Please try again if the problem appears to be related to network traffic.
There are currently no issues with our download server.
------------------------------------------------------------------
BUT IF IT IS MY FIREWALL WHAT PORT IS USED BY THE PROGRAM TO ALLOW ADAWARE ?
Can anyone help ?

hello folks,
I've too same problem: after upgrading to Anniversary Edition the Update function does not working and reply error as "connection error, check settings".
The system is Windows Vista 32 with McAfee Security Center, where the Firewall is setting "allow" to all the ad-aware running programs (try with McAfee firewall OFF, and the same appens) (Windows Firewall is disabled).
If need to open some Port on firewall router, then what Port number ? And what protocol?
all of that is absurd, before upgrading all work fine....
someone please give advice truly effective...
hey LAVASOFT... there is someone at home?
shall we move to some other software?
thank you

assuming you have an english windows xp.

Hello,
Having the same problem here, when I try to update my Vista 32 bit running trend micro internet security 2009, it says "connection error, check your settings." I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling with trend micro turned off, I've checked my settings, nothing is wrong with my computer, but the ad-aware ae def file is 0144 instead of 0146. I finally gave up and put ad-aware 2008 back on my computer. If you have any suggestions that won't wipe out my computer, please respond.
Thanks,
kim

I'm missing the update.log file in my Logs-folder. May be that the update have never been successful. Before I used Spybot with the same problem with updating and instead started to use Ad-aware but no success in updating...

To be clear what is happening, can you attach the entire update.log.
Or you can move or delete the log file, and try to update again, and post the log-file which will be created.

i have vista and it doesnt have a log folder?please advise
vista has a different path where the log-files are.
c:\ProgramData\Lavasoft\Ad-Aware\Logs, if I remember correctly, I don't have a vista-install here at the moment so I can't check.
It will probably even be hidden as default.

LS Sebastian is correct with the path and also it is a hidden folder

From the log file it seems that the update manager doesn't even try to connect to our servers.
I will report back when I know more about this issue.

thanks ls sebastian. i look forward to hearing from you.for you information i have tried to disable my firewall completely which has no effect and also the error message is instantaneous, its not asif it seems to attempt connecting and fails, it litterally pops up as soon as you press update.
thanks in advance.
Sebastian - it will be good if you can get back to us as it seems like a problem for several people and that Vista is involved in many cases. Might be a coincidence, but could some Vista settings be blocking the update?

Yes, I will post back in this thread when I have more information.
Is it only on vista that this is happening, and if that is the case, do you have UAC enabled?

Hi,
I found this thread as I had the same problem.
I opened adaware to see if changing the auto update to manual would work as I had it set that way on the previous version. By mistake I changed the information updates box to "do not check for updates automatically" and tried to do a web update. It worked and updated the files
Not sure why it worked but it might work for other people too.
BTW I am using XP SP3.
