Hi cootmaster,

Maybe you need to reinstall Ad-Aware?

Since so many persons have wished to get a simpler Ad-Aware that can be run together with another antivirus program, maybe there will be such a program in the future.

What have you done with the computer since Ad-Aware could update without problems, for example installed, uninstalled, updated something?

Something must have happened that make Ad-Aware crash.

I've been getting this problem consistently for more than a week on two XP computers, running either manual or automatic updates. Unfortunately, I can't pin it down to anything specific that I've done.

I've not bothered to report it to you until now because I too am hoping for a simpler Ad-Aware that can be run together with another antivirus program, in my case Avast!

    Cecilia, try my correction:

'When it crashes again I will post the picture. It does not send the crash screens to Microsoft. It closes and restarts after update'

    @cootmaster and sixdbs:

A few weeks ago, 9.6 got a new splash screen with a "remind me later" feature. Did the crashes start at the same time you got that possibility or later on?

Have you selected to be reminded later?

I know that the nag screen has been there more than one month. The "Remind me later" was added to the nag screen approx. 20-25th of May, that is one month ago. Did your crashes start one month ago or at some other time?

I'm sorry, I can't say with certainty when the crashing started. It could well have been about a month ago. Just to be clear, the message reads: "Ad-Aware was shut down unexpectedly and has generated an error report. By sending the error report to Lavasoft you can help us identify the problem and fix it. Click OK to send the report (no other information will be sent) or Cancel if you prefer not to send it." The Ad-Aware icon disappears from the system tray (when you roll your mouse over it) and returns when the update has finished.

I did click on "Remind me later" when it appeared and the nag screen didn't re-appear for a month.

Thank you Cecilia. I'll look forward to hearing about their reply; not only concerning the program crashing but, if they're prepared to comment yet, a simpler Ad-Aware that can be run together with another antivirus program.

No one has said that you need to upgrade to version 10. No one has said that have to reinstall Ad-Aware 9.x. No one has said that you need to patch anything.

Two persons with Norton and two with Avast Free. That is useful information for Lavasoft.

Windows XP Home with Service Pack 3 and regular Microsoft updates.

Avast! free antivirus version 7.0.1426 with regular definition updates.

(I also disable the anti-virus control process in Ad-Watch-live setting, but it usually re-enables itself after update or sometimes, a restart of Ad-aware)

    Thanks for your help.

    Hi,

The short version of the problem is that Avast & Ad-Aware are wrestling over resources. The advice is not to install Ad-Aware & Avast on the same machine. Here comes the science!

Hooks in RKU and crash of AAW9.6:

Conclusion: the problem arises when the AAW9.6 hook gets control after AVAST’s hook. The problem will be solved if AAW9.6 sets its hook up before AVAST’s - AAW9.6 will, in that case, be successfully updated. Basically, don't run both apps at the same time.

The same problem is reproduced on a clean system with AAW9.6 if unhook NTCreateKey, NTSetValueKey and run update.
