Se Locks Up Will Not Complete Scann

    Update on this issue....

     

    We are receiving mixed responses about solutions to this problem, and we are still trying to narrow it down, as we cannot reproduce it here in our testing environments.

     

    The 2 main causes of this appear to be bad clusters on the harddrive and a large volume of temporary internet files.

     

    Therefore the following should be done.

     

    Use CCleaner to get rid of as much temp files as possible

     

    Run Checkdisk and fix any / all problems with the disk

     

    Do your Ad-Aware Scan....

    Tried your way in, worked but still stalled at shared DLLs, does not detect anything before it gets to there. I have had very good luck with SE before but for the last month it will not complete a scan. Do not understand your target family instructions. I train dogs for a living, I sometimes struggle with technology.

    Hi,

     

    Try the following:

     

    Click "Start" > select "Run" > type the text shown in bold below (including the quotation marks and with the same spacing as shown) for your version of Ad-Aware SE:

     

    "C:\Program Files\Lavasoft\Ad-Aware SE Professional\Ad-Aware.exe" /full +procnuke

    "C:\Program Files\Lavasoft\Ad-Aware SE Plus\Ad-Aware.exe" /full +procnuke

    "C:\Program Files\Lavasoft\Ad-Aware SE Personal\Ad-Aware.exe" +procnukep

     

    Click OK.

     

    Note: The path above (between the quotes) is the default location of Ad-Aware SE, if you installed to a different directory please adjust it to the correct location. For Ad-Aware SE Personal, when the GUI launches, you will need to click Start > Select Full System Scan > Click Next.

     

    Click OK.

     

    2. When the scan has completed, select Next.

    3. In the Scanning Results window, select the "Scan Summary" tab.

    4. Check the box next to each "target family" you wish to remove.

    5. Click next, Click OK.

     

    If you still have a problem, cancel BEFORE the scan reaches the point of stalling -- say after 20 objects are detected. Then click cancel and click on the log file. Remove any objects you choose and rescan. Again stop the scan before it reaches the point of stalling and remove any additional objects. Then try a full scan without stopping it. It should work for you.

    If the scan does not detect anything before that point you do not need to follow the advice about removing target families, as you have nothing to remove.

    We recently got a puppy, golden labrador.... about 14 weeks old. *Saffron incase anybody is wondering*

     

    Any suggestions to get her to stop chewing my ankles?

    Birddog. Please download and install "HijackThis" from Majorgeeks here

     

    Install this, and do a scan of your system. You can create a HijackThis log from the scan, which you can then post in the "HijackThis Logs" forum under "Help! I think my computer is infected, what do I do?"

    His HijackThis log is clean. I searched around a bit and found one solution offered that worked in another forum, with a user having the same problem with Adaware freezing at the Shared DLLs

    I think this method is easiest if you have never done this before:

    Iwould recommend running the 3rd option under #4

     

    To run Chkdsk from My Computer or Windows Explorer

    1. Double-click My Computer, and then right-click the hard disk drive that you want to check.

    2. Click Properties, and then click Tools.

    3. Under Error-checking, click Check Now. A dialog box that shows the Check disk options is displayed,

    4. Use one of the following procedures:

    • To run Chkdsk in read-only mode, click Start.

    • To repair errors without scanning the volume for bad sectors, select the Automatically fix file system errors check box, and then click Start.

    • To repair errors, locate bad sectors, and recover readable information, select the Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors check box, and then click Start.

    Note If one or more of the files on the hard disk drive are open, you will receive the following message:

    The disk check could not be performed because the disk check utility needs exclusive access to some Windows files on the disk. These files can be accessed by restarting Windows. Do you want to schedule the disk check to occur the next time you restart the computer?

    Click Yes to schedule the disk check, and then restart your computer to start the disk check.

    I suspect that Symantec may have something to do with it. Did you recently update / install Symantec before this hanging issue occured?

     

    It could be that Ad-Aware is conflicting with Symantec, and the Symantec anti-tampering technology is blocking Ad-Aware. Could you try to temporarily turn off Symantec, and do another scan?

    could you post up a list of the contents of the shared dlls folder?

     

    tip: right click on the bar that decides what file details are shown... add vendor information and product version etc... this may help in seeing if there is a nasty file there....

     

    have you been experiencing any unusual problems with the machine at all? (apatr from the freezing that is)

    The list of shared DLLs can be found in the registry under

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\SharedDLLs

     

    Post here if you aren't familiar on how to work with the registry and we'll give you some help...

     

    Just export the entire SharedDLLs-key and post the exported data here... maybe that can be of some help...

    Will do, where do I look for this shared dlls file. Are you in Sweden, what time is it there?

     

    No problems at all other than Adaware will not complete in the last couple of weeks. CHKDSK did fix some files and I thought we had it, but no go.

     

    I am perfectly willing to pay for this product, I have used it with success for two years. Is part of my problem I have the free version.

    Go here: http://www.sysinternals.com/utilities/listdlls.html

     

    Download and unzip the utility, and it will display the dll's that are running.

    In case you need more instructions ...

     

    Download from the link at the bottom of that page, and unzip it into.

     

    Next, Start > Run and type this into the box taht opens: listdlls > dlllog.txt

     

    This will create a log file that will open in Notepad, and you can copy/paste it here.

    The output is stored in a file called dlllog.txt. If you search for it, do you see it? It will open with NotePad.

    Right click on the Start button, then Search ...

     

    Enter dlllog.txt in the "search for files or folders named" box, and then select your hard drive (usually c:\) in the "look in" drop down box.

    To create a log with ListDlls that can be posted on the forums, or sent to the experts - download ListDlls from the provided URL. Unzip the file c:\

     

    Now open a command prompt and type "cd \". Type "listdlls > dlllog.txt". This will create a log file containing the output from the ListDlls command in c:\dlllog.txt

     

    ListDlls is very handy if you have a windows process which has been injected with a dll, and you wish to find out which dll is the bad apple. With Listdlls, you can specify a process to list the loaded dlls for. "listdlls explorer.exe > dlllog.txt" will give you a list of all dlls loaded into explorer.exe

    Using search from the Start button. typing dlllog.txt. turns up nada. dlllist runs from my downloaded files folder, I see it run but then disappears quickly.

    Did you put the spaces in the listdlls > dlllog.txt command?

     

    You can type listdlls /? for a list of the command line switches.

     

    If no joy, you could download Process Explorer from: http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/freeware/procexp.shtml

     

    Install and open it. In the menu pick VIEW | Lower Pane | DLL’s.

     

    This will list the DLL’s and what application has them open.

    You could also use "Filemon" from Sysinternals during the Ad-Aware scan.

     

    Download filemon from http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/Filemon.html and unzip it to the Desktop

     

    Run Filemon.exe. When you have come into the program, you can filter which process you wish to see disk activity for. To filter a process, click the icon that looks like a funnel, or press "ctrl + L"

     

     

    When Filemon has started, start your Ad-Aware scan. At the point Ad-Aware hangs, you will hopefully see the last file it accessed right before the hang

    Do not believe I am infected, just trying to get SE to run without stalling out. Webroot Spysweeper and Spybot both say clean machine. I have always just preferred the quickness and cleaness of your product. Installed and ran those add-ons you recommended. Not really understanding the dlls in the lower pane thing. Thanks!

    Maybe you aren't infected... But you still want to find out why Ad-Aware hangs during scan i guess...

     

    The Filemon idea from Steve sounded quite interesting to find out exactly which file it hangs at...

     

    Steps:

    1. Download Filemon from Sysinternals (link in Steves post above), and unzip it.

    2. Run Filemon.exe

    3. Click on the "Filter"-button at the top (label will be displayed if you hover the buttons),

    4. In the "include"-field enter "Ad-Aware" (without " ") and click "Ok".

    5. Make sure that "Capture Events" in the "File"-menu is checked

     

    Now all file access by Ad-Aware will be logged by Filemon...

     

    Start a scan as you normally do (will go much slower now when logging is on)

     

    When Ad-Aware hangs, click "File->Save" in Filemon and save the log. Send it to research@lavasoft.de

     

    Hope these steps are clear enough
