You need to post the actual HJT log for CJ to review - she is an expert at reading the logs, and may be able to locate a possible problem

Log is clean. And if scans are clean, I don't think it is currently infected then.

Could you run this free tool and post the log from it please. I don't think you have Vundo at present, but if you had it in the past it could be cause of some problems.

If no Vundo is found it will say so. If Vundo files ARE found, please allow the fix tool to remove them.

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.

    double-click *VundoFix.exe* to run it.

    - Put a check next to *Run VundoFix as a task*.

    - You will receive a message saying vundofix will close and re-open in a minute or less. Click *OK*

    - When VundoFix re-opens, click the *Scan for Vundo* button.

    - Once it's done scanning, click the *Remove Vundo* button.

    - You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click *YES*

    - Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.

    - When completed, it will prompt that it will shutdown your computer, click *OK*.

    - Turn your computer back on.

    - Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt into your next reply

Unrealted, but needs addressing: All of those Sun Java versions listed on the VundoFix report are out of date and a security risk as malware can still use them to exploit your system just by being there.

Go to Start / Control Panel and look in Add/Remove programs. Remove all old versions of Sun Java.

They will appear in the "J's" something similar to:

    j2re1.4.2_05 or

JAVA 2 RUNTIME ENVIROMENT SE V1.4.2_03

JAVA 2 RUNTIME ENVIROMENT SE V.14.2_06

(or similar, and there may be more than one. Remove them all)

Then go get the latest up to date version here:

    http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp

Here's why removing old versions of Sun Java is important:

Potential Vulnerability with Sun Java auto update

    http://www.dslreports.com/forum/remark,14738046

    ..................................

And then, back to the problem at hand.

    Could you please go here:

    http://www.lavasoftsupport.com/index.php?showforum=82

Scroll through the listed symptoms to see resolutions that may apply to the error you are seeing.

Also, the Windows XP event viewer might be of some help.

Go to Start > Run and type in the box: eventvwr

Look for any red items under Applications

You can copy error codes by using the clipboard button (looks like a text pad icon) to copy to your clipboard and then paste the info into Notepad. Collect those and post them back here.

Removed all old versions of Sun Java (had 3).

    Loaded latest version as requested.

Checked support forum for any listed symptoms but found none that were relevant.

Ran eventvwr as you suggested and found plenty of red errors as you mentioned with the first one dating back to July 12th when my problem first occured. I could not get an error code to show but was able to cut and paste the following. Maybe you can find something from this.....

Tuesday, August 08, 2006 Application Error Faulting application ad-aware.exe, version 6.2.0.236, faulting module kernel32.dll, version 5.1.2600.2180, fault address 0x0001eb33.

I really appreciate all the help you have given me so far and am learning a lot as we go along...Thanks.

    Hi CJ

Not having much luck with this feature. When I double click on the errors or any other events, the window that appears says there are No properties available on this object.

I have tried other ways of accessing the properties but this also gives the same message.

I ran the eventvwr on my desktop and had no problem accessing the properties for any events logged...in fact it was just as you indicated with your last attached thumbnail.

Do you know of any other ways to get the error properties?

That one looks like it might be problem with Windows.

Here is an illustration of how to use the info in the XP Event Viewer. You want to copy each of those errors as shown using the button in Step 3 to copy the report to clipboard and then paste into notepad and save.

In Step 4, click on the link shown in the window and click *ok* to send the information. If a resolution has been found for this error more information will be shown on how to resolve the problem.

Do that for each of the errors shown (unless they are the same errors, just a different day).

Let me know if any of them bring you a resolution. If not, paste in the Errors for which no resolution has been found and I'll see if I can find something on them.

    morick,

Could you please open HijackThis and instead of scan choose *Open Misc. Tools Section*

    Then choose *Open Uninstall Manager*

Wait while it prepares a list and when it finishes, press the *save list* button

Notepad should popup with a text file. Please copy those results back here.

    Is this any help?

    EUREKA!!!

Managed to finally get the program to run. When trying for the umpteenth time to start it after having no success I had a window popup that said,

Exception EReadError in Module Ad-Aware.exe bei 00021FE7

When I typed this in the search box for Google, it gave me several hits, one of them being a topic in the Lavasoft Support forum from which it asked to check and see if the following files were on the computer.

    Riched20.dll & Riched32.dll

If either or both were missing then it would give the exception error, it said.

After searching I found that I was missing Riched32.dll and was directed to download the file. After installing the file in C:/ Windows/System32 I rebooted the computer and VOILA! It started up perfectly.

You can now probably consider this issue resolved.

Thanks for all the help in getting there.
