McAfee Conflict

I purchased McAfee Total Protection for my computer after I started having issues with ZoneAlarm not updating. It did not update the Anti Virus for 2 weeks. I uninstalled ZA and tried to load the McAfee. It stated that I had Ad-aware on my computer and it was a conflict with their program. I needed to remove Ad-aware or I could continue on with the install - except the McAfee program causing the conflict would not be loaded. I opted to continue. That is when a pop up asked me if I wanted to continue - McAfee Anti Virus would not be loaded because of the conflict. The AV was the main reason for buying the program. I uninstalled Ad-Aware and tried to reinstall the McAfee Total Protection Program. It still says that I have Ad-aware installed. I contacted McAfee - they didn't know what to do. They told me to reinstall and remove - which I did and it still won't load. I would like to keep Ad-aware and install the complete McAfee Total Protection Program. Anyone have any suggestions?? I can't install McAfee because it says I have Ad-aware still on my computer. What's worse? I'm now going on 3 weeks and NO ANTIVIRUS PROGRAM is on my Computer. CAN SOMEONE PLEASE HELP ME??

I find it to be very annoying of mcafee to still have this problem that they "fixed" but is causing problems. This artificial incompatibility with ad-aware they have created doesn't help my image of the mcafee company (which wasn't so great to begin with). One thing I can say, other anti-virus programs don't have this problem with ad-aware.

Not entirely the case, my friend! This appears to be a common issue with the two big antivirus providers and possible with CA.

I was unable to install Norton Internet Security, a multi-faceted package similar to McAfee Total Protection for precisely the same reason. However, there was one snall difference - Norton's install utility stated that the following package must be removed for their antivirus package to work, then simply displayed a blank field. Following two exchanges of email and an online chat session where I was told to remove all third-party software until the problem went away, I returned Norton Internet Security to the store.

Yes, I did uninstall Ad-Aware and Spybot. I also uninstalled Aluria Antivirus (EarthLink/PeoplePC) just to be safe, based on several comments found on the web.

I ran regedit to find occurrences of 'ad-aware' 'adaware' and 'lavasoft' Found one 'ad-aware' two 'adaware' and five 'lavasoft' even though the package had been removed. I then reinstalled Ad-Aware, ran a scan of my machine and again uninstalled it. The second time I ran regedit I had one occurrence of 'ad-aware' two of 'adaware' and eight of 'lavasoft.'

I then purchased Registry Mechanic to clean the registry and delete entries that are not associated with the installed applications. It didn't remove a single 'ad-aware' 'adaware' or 'lavasoft' entry. I ran it several times, installed and uninstalled Ad-Aware again, ran Registry Mechanic two more times and went through hoops for a few hours.

After uninstalling Registry Mechanic, which necessitated the exchange of six messages with PC Tools very unresponsive and unimaginative tech support, I purchased Max Secure Registry Cleaner.

Now, I'm still struggling with McAfee and Ad-Aware! While all entries for 'lavasoft' have been removed, two remain for 'adaware' and one for 'ad-aware.' It is this final entry for 'ad-aware' that attracts my attention as it is in the path:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\Ad-Aware SE Personal.

I believe this is the key to our problem with both Norton and McAfee. And potentially all other antivirus packages that check the registry for potentially incompatible packages.

    My concerns are these:

1- Why didn't Ad-Aware delete this entry from the registry?

2- Why didn't Registry Mechanic delete this entry from the registry?

3- Why didn't Max Secure Registry Cleaner delete this entry from the registry?

Now (he said gingerly), can I simply delete the above noted entry from the registry or do I have to do something else, either before or after, to ensure success and the ability to install McAfee Total Protection?? Or have I tree'd the wrong possum, kind friends??

Anti-virus companies have legitimate reasons to claim incompatibility, they usually have real-time scanning features which could conflict, ad-aware se free, doesn't have anything to be incompatible with.

    ...

    ...

    My concerns are these:

1- Why didn't Ad-Aware delete this entry from the registry?

Bug in the uninstaller most likely, normally wouldn't cause a problem for re-installing ad-aware, no other program needs to look at that (except to cause artificial incompatibility).

2- Why didn't Registry Mechanic delete this entry from the registry?
    Registry "cleaners" are usually junk.

3- Why didn't Max Secure Registry Cleaner delete this entry from the registry?
    Registry "cleaners" are usually junk.

Ok - need some help here. I've followed every link and feel like I'm chasing my tail! I still can not load my McAfee Total Protection program and I CAN NOT find any Ad-aware SE Personal to uninstall.

I do not have an Ad-Aware Icon on my desktop

I do not have an Ad-Aware Folder in my Programs

I do not have it ANYWHERE on my computer - as I can tell. I have searched for it. I have used several Registry Cleaners and still I can not load the McAfee. I am not experienced enough to dig into the registry itself to see if there are any leftover in there.

Can someone with some experience help me? I downloaded AVG as a temp fix since I haven't had AntiVirus protection but I want to put the McAfee on my computer. I can't take it back to Staples - I've already asked. Once I opened it - it's mine unless the program is flawed - then they will give me another of the same.

So right now it looks like I'm out $70 - when I could have downloaded a free AV program like AVG.

HELP I'm at the end of my rope!

If mcafee is looking for ad-aware fragments anwhere but in:

    regkeys:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Lavasoft

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\Ad-Aware*

    or folder:

    C:\Program Files\Lavasoft\

then it is just being stupid, so check those places (you only need to check and report back, without making changes)

Check your registry with regedit for "ad-aware" and "lavasoft", see if you come up with anything.

You can return in to mcafee, see this page:
