Scan never concludes (just keeps going and going....) [Developer Comment]
I haven't found this exact problem in the Forums (mind you, not for lack of searching). Sorry if this is a repeated question.
My scans refuse to conclude and continue perpetually (looks like they would forever) until I manually end them (before the Scan is complete).
In "Full Scan" mode, the programme seems to be working fine... found 25 cases of "infections"... then progresses to a point where it is "Scanning Conditional Files" - continuously. I have left it in this mode for over seven hours (yes, really) before finally giving up - although I am sure that it would have continued on happily for days if given the opportunity.
Hoping to bypasss this problem, I attempted to run a "Smart Scan". Here it stalls during the "Scanning Registry (Preparing GUID Scanning)" phase (which, to make matters more confusing, it had completed successfully in "Full Scan" mode). Again... doesn't crash or freeze - just keeps scanning forever with no end in sight.
On an unrelated note (and I realise that the fact that I am using the Free Version of the Software doesn't lend much clout to my suggestion, but I'll think aloud here anyway) -
It would be nice if there were Progress Bars (as in previous versions), so that you could tell whether certain functions are still working and monitor their progress (such as during "Download Updates") or if your computer has just "lost the trail".
Thank you in advance for any assistance.

Hello everyone,I'm one of the developers at Lavasoft who is currently looking into this matter.
I assure you that we are aware of the issue and are working to fix it as soon as possible. The main problem is that we aren't able to reproduce the error on our own test systems which makes it very hard for us to locate the bug. If you are experiencing this issue we would love to get in touch with you and if possible have you run a special diagnostic build of Ad-Aware 2007 which will help us locate the problem and ultimately fix the issue altogether.
Please send me a PM if you are experiencing the error and would consider to work with us to try to resolve it.
Cheers,
Babar
Hi
I am having the exact same problem-scan gos on forever once it hits conditional folder in both the full scan and smart acan mode
I tried the suggestion given of having files over 10,000 skipped, but with same results
At the moment I am left to look for other sources of adware protection, unless this can be resolved

Just adding my experience into the thread ... Windows XP Pro; hangs at Conditional Folders; ran Repair; downloaded and installed latest version of Adaware; can't "stop scan"; runs for hours (I let mine run overnight!); will appreciate knowing when you have a fix for this.

Same problem here. I would be glad to cooperate with any diagnostics for which you need a guinea pig. I just installed the newest free version yesterday though I have used your other free home products before and have great confidence in you from experience and from your reputation. Please contact me. This is my first time using the forum so I hope I am doing so correctly.
I experienced something like this when attempting to use Adaware 2007 on a 64 bit OS. By the way, anyone heard when the release of a 64 Vista compatable version of Adware is scheduled for?

Hi Jaguar & nc17meg,
Sometimes AAW 2007 can get hung up on large, compressed & archived, or corrupted files. Open AAW 2007 and go to "Settings > Scanning > Scanning options" and select "Skip files larger, changing the file size down to 10,000.
Then try running both Smart and Full scans. If they work properly, you can increase the size up to say, 20,000 and if scans still complete, try 30,000.
Please post back with how you both get on.
Regards,
Spike

hi, i'm having the same problem.....i can't give you a solution unfortunately but i have noticed that the number of objects scanned actually STOPS when it freezes, ie the scan is not actually continuing, although it APPEARS to be

[Hi Spike,
Many thanks for your reply and for your help. I reduced the file size down to 10,000 kb as you suggested - but, unfortunately, the (Full) scan gets bogged down at the exact same point that it did before ["Scanning (Conditional Files")]. I haven't tried Smart Scan. I would have done, but the results of the Full Scan suggest that the outcome would be no different.
With kind regards,
Jag

Hi Jag,
Try running chkdsk to scan for/repair any hard-drive errors before defragging your machine .
Next, run the Clean Manager - go to "Start > Run" and type in cleanmgr then click "OK". Select "Temp.files/Temp.Internet files/Recycle Bin then run and clean them out and then reboot.
Now try both Smart and Full scans, with the level set to 5,000 (even if the Full still won't complete, try the Smart as it may well run right through).
Please post back with how you get on.
Regards,
Spike

Ok gang, LS Babar is our developer investigating this issue. He is asking you to send him a PM (PM = private message) and he will get with you on it. If you are new to using the forums or the PM (private message) system, you can either use this link to send a message to LS Babar:
http://www.lavasoftsupport.com/index.php?a...4&MID=54920
or if you hover your mouse over his Username as seen in this screenshot, choose "send message" from the popup menu.
NOTE: Please do not use the PM system to send general support requests. In this case, if you can reproduce the problem of freezing during scans and want to assist our development team in working to find/diagnose the problem, then yes, please do send him a message as outlined above

Thank you once more, Spike.. and Everyone looking into this.
I sent the following to LS Babar via PM (or so I thought). As there is no record of it having been sent successfully (will I never get anything to work properly? ) ... I'll repeat it here:
Hi.
This is regarding a Scan issue for which I was the original poster (scans continue "endlessly"). I, for one, would be happy to assist you (per your request in Forums) in your attempt to diagnose and to resolve this problem.
Please let me know how I may be of help. Do you need a personal email address to which to send the Diagnostic Programme for d/l? Please advise.
Thank you for your efforts.
With regards,
Jag

I have also had continuous problems with the same issue. Once the scan gets to the point where it says "Scanning folders (Conditional)" it just sits there forever. In the "Scanning Options" section, I've reduced the number to "Skip file larger than 10000 kb" and that has not changed the scan results. It still gets stuck at the same point. I've also tried to stop the scan after it gets to this point so I can just delete the "total infections found" so far, as someone else has mentioned as a possibilty, but it won't allow me to stop scanning. I click on "Stop Scan" and it doesn't do anything. The only way I can stop the scan is Ctr-Alt-Del and shut down the whole program without accomplishing anything.
I see now that "LS Babar" has entered the forum saying they are working on it. I have had this problem for weeks, ever since I downloaded the new version of AdAware and have been checking the forums frequently to see if anything has changed. All I ever see are the same "solutions" from "spike-nz" over and over, with more comments on how none of those work. Why has it taken Lavasoft so long to even acknowledge there is a problem and to have someone with the company comment on this? I tried Spybot software and it was even more confusing than this, so I deleted it. The old AdAware SE seemed to work just fine. Can we just get that updated go back to that?

mntnman007,
There are various known causes that can make Ad-Aware malfunction. Spike has been posting the known solutions (many times that DO work), sometimes it is security settings in another security program, and in some cases, malware is the culprit so we have to rule those out to find that some users with a clean PC are still experiencing the problem. We try to reproduce the problem and so far have not been able to so in our labs. So we are only at the point to find out what additional something is causing this that we need to get some investigation going (diagnostics) from those affected because not all PCs are exhibiting this same behavior.
Is it possible your machine is infected? Has it had any symptoms of malware? If not, please try contacting LS Babar so he can gather any information necessary to help us pinpoint why this is happening on some clean computers but not all. If you know this computer was infected recently or suspect an infection then go to this subform
http://www.lavasoftsupport.com/index.php?showforum=36
and start a new topic for analysis of possible malware

I was at the usual stopping point for another AdAware scan - "Scanning folders (Conditional)" - and just wanted to see if any solution had come up. LS Babar responded last week that he/she was checking into a solution to the problem, but it looks like there has been no response since that message was posted and said this problem was being checked on. Does anyone out there have a solution to this? Is there any way to just stop the scan after it gets to this stopping point and just delete the "Total infections detected" that have already been found. I hit the "Stop Scan" button and it does nothing. The only way I can ever stop a scan is Ctrl-Alt-Del and close down the whole program.

April 6 2008.
Hello, this is Octk here,
I have confirmed with a number of tests of my own devising that scan bloc at "Scanning folders (Conditional)"
is a problem which won't go away. All kinds of published remedies, restarts and reloads do not affect the problem.
I have found no workaround which works. The only suggested promising way out is running a diagnostic version of
Ad-Aware on those PC units having the problem, and there are more than this forum suggests. Most people can't be
bothered to enter into discussion on this problem and if a user finds the Free version gives problems, he/she certainly
won't consider paying for the other versions.
I suspect the problem is linked to a specific PC system profile. Is it linked to processor type or memory config ?
Is the problem linked to the version of Windows used, 2000, NT, XP, Vista or other ? Is it linked to a specific Antivirus
utilisation, Firefox 2 (I doubt that, but...), or other ?
In short, it it possible to identify a specific PC system profile which brings out the problem ?
Best regards to Babar and all on this forum from Octk.

Lets try that mntnman007, I can take a look to see if it is being caused by malware.
Babar is still working it yes but no solution yet.

I'm having the same trouble with Ad-Aware 2007 hanging when the progress bar indicates Preparing GUID scanning is almost complete, about 50 seconds into a scan. Removing deep registry scan and including a 5000k file size limit made no difference. The Scan time clock continues its count, but the laptop's fan runs hard and no further activity occurs (including the hard drive activity indicator, which shows next to no activity at this point)
This situation has occurred for me on two separate laptops using 2007, both HP models running XP. I have a third machine but I'm not going to upgrade away from SE on that one...
Once the engine reaches this point, Stop Scan does nothing, and sometimes Windows Task Manager takes a few minutes to open. It shows aawservice.exe running around 80 MB of memory usage and around 60% CPU usage. (Ad-Aware2007.exe looks fine meanwhile, only using around 33 MB/01%)
For me this happens with both Smart Scan and Full Scan.
Just adding my statistics to the mix!

im having this same issue.. only it hangs on "Scanning Archive File" and I watched as close as I could, and it seems to hang while scanning through the Zone Alarm folder in program files (C drive)
also, after this happends ill close down Adaware ofcourse, and if I open Adaware up again it tells me there is a core error, than I close that and it says theres an error 5002
hope this helps solve this issue, kinda sucks having my adaware broken :[
btw, this is a problem im having on the newest machine I just built which isnt even a 3 days old, and I know the machine is clean, because adaware is one of the first security programs I install, along with Zone Alarm and Avast Home.

I'm having the same type problem. It started yesterday after downloading and installing the latest definition update 0069.0000. It starts to run continuously after about 13 minutes when it reaches the point when it says it is Scanning
Folders (Conditional). It then runs for many hours with only the elapsed time changing. As far as I know my system is clean as judged by other spyware and virus protection programs.

Hello Admin or whoever I think I may have an Idea at least what may have started this Problem with it hanging up on the conditional files.
in another thread titled conditional files myself and another mentioned that this just started in the last few days and I have noticed this thread started around march 29th.
the reason I mention this is becuase on the 9th of april I did a update (#0069.0000) had not done one in about 2weeks or so not sure exactly when it was for certain but it had been a while since the update and it was not till have that update when I started having problems so maybe something in that area is why we are having Problems
I don't know maybe others can chime in here and help us out if this is the Problem can we undo an update and if so how maybe it may be that simple of a fix
again thanks for all your help by the way just to let you know I have cleaned my disk and defraged and all of the suggestions that have been mentiioned and this has still not fixed any thing and it does not matter how small the file is that I over look I have changed it to 5000 and it still hangs up.
the only other thing it to figure out how to circumvent the conditional files and I have no clue on how or what they are.
maybe you could help us know that maybe we can do something there to get it past it well again thanks look forward to your thoughts and fixes thanks

OK CalamityJane, this sort of thing sure can be difficult to diagnose and cure if you can't reproduce it, but I think Krawler has confirmed for you that this problem occurs on a brand new, uninfected build. Time to work harder and stop asking the, "Is your system infected?" question, which carrys with it the inherent suggestion, "It may not be our fault."
My problems began earlier this month when I downloaded AdAware2007 and replaced the SE version. The full scan mode hung just as described by others (tho I can't recall the exact function that was displayed - it may have been checking an archive).
Today I fired up 2007 again, and downloaded new files, including definitions and a new service module, intending to try for a quick scan this time and see what happened. Immediately after the download, and before the program GUI re-appeared, a message-box informed me that "AdAware2007 has created errors... program will need to be restarted... a log is being created."
So I restart, intending to try the scan, but, again before the GUI, I get the following:-
"An error has occurred in AdAware2007.
"Component
"TLVFocusCtrl
"Message:
"Access violation at address 00557F9F in module 'AdAware2007.exe.' Read of address 00000004"
This was followed by a request to refer the info to https://secure.lavasoft.com/support/supportcentre/
But that url produces a 'Page does not exist' browser error (404 or something similar?).
This is the point at which I think many folks would be deterred from going any further; but it was of sufficient annoyance to provoke a persistent sod like me to pursue the issue, so here I am. And I would agree that the number of us posting on this board is probably but the 'tip of the iceberg'.
I'd be willing to help resolve the issue: but, meantime, I would join my voice to those who hanker after the SE vesion (which worked just fine) and request that updated definitions files be made available for SE until the fix for 2007 is available.
I note that someone has made reference to Zone-alarm. I'm using an early version of that, too; my anti-virus is ETrust.
Other info which may be of help:-
OS: Windows 2000 Pro, 5.0.2195 Service Pack 4 Build 2195
System: MSI (MS-6590)
CPU: x86 Family 6 Model 8 Stepping 0 AuthenticAMD ~1536 Mhz

Memory: 261,616 KB Total Physical
27,880 KB Available
893,576 KB Total Virtual
317,996 KB Available
PageFile: 631,960 KB
Hope you folks at Lavasoft find an answer soon; and meantime listen to your supporters and give us some updated definitions for SE!

I have the same problem, so I thought perhaps a virus had corrupted the software but my virus scanners found nothing, so I decided to uninstall Ad-Aware and reinstall it again... Now this is the really weird bit.
When I opened the Control Panel>Add/delete Programs, Ad-Aware (which usually is the very first one in the list), was not there!
Strange I thought, I'd better take it out manually.
So I went into the Program files and tried to delete it, but I couldn't, a box kept popping up to say it was being used and couldn't be deleted.
I'm stuck with an Ad-Aware that is virtually useless and would appreciate knowing how to uninstall or repair it.

Just installed Ad-AWare 2007 and you can now add ME to the list of the "Conditional Folders" problems. SE worked just fine with my computer--no reason why this 2007 version shouldn't either. It's NOT our computers--it's something in the program itself, (or, as someone speculated the latest definitions themselves)

I just installed Ad-Aware 2007 on an older laptop (P3 running XP pro) and it hangs at Conditional Folders. I have Ad-Aware 2007 installed on a newer laptop ( P4 running XP pro) and it works fine .
I have un-installed and re-installed to no avail, I also have Avast home addition and Spybot 1.5.2 installed which are working fine.
.......help!
P.S. I un-installed SE...which was working fine and installed Ad-Aware 2007. The older SE version worked fine. Please post a link to the old SE installer ....I'd like to use it again in the interim.
Thanks

THis is exacly what happened to me--just downloaded the most recent updates, ran it again--and it worked!! OF course, I'm not sure if it actually DID scan those conditional files, or simply skipped them altogether????
BuT anyway, it got rid of the tracking cookies.
