Antivermin / Spy Sherriff removal for a NEWBIE

Hello, I am a complete newbie when it comes to windows as I have come from a MAC environment.

I unfortunately have the Antivermin virus / adware problem. Before I new about following the proper procedure for removal I manually put whatever I could find in Program Files called Antivermin in the trash. Needless to say it has left other things behind which Ad-Aware has yet to remove fully. I have downloaded the latest definitions for Adware SE and removed what it found.

My toolbar (icons on the bottom next to the clock) has a flashing system alert icon which alternates with ablue support and help question mark ,,, then every couple minutes a system alert ballon pop up occurs which informs me of various viruses/spyware/trojans... then clicking the ballon will redirect me to a website ((( fasle positive ))).... which offers the solution for $$.

Also my IE 7 browser now has additional toolbar icons such as: protection bar, remove adware and popups, scan for spyware, spam protection, security test ----> ALL of which I am certain are more false positive sites asking for money to download their software. (I would like these removed too)))

ALso every time I launch IE my homepage redirects itself to another website which offers more false positive solutions... UUGGG (how do I fix this too)

* You may want to print out or make a copy of these instructions before starting, because you will not be able to connect to the internet during most of this fix.

* Download smitRem.exe and save the file to your desktop.
Double click on the file to extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

* First download AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 from HERE and save that file to your desktop.
This is a 30 day trial of the program
1. Once you have downloaded AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5, locate the icon on the desktop and double-click it to launch the set up program.
2. Once the setup is complete you will need run AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 and update the definition files.
3. Run AVG Anti-Spyware
4. From the main AVG Anti-Spyware screen, click on Update, then click the Start update button.
5. After the update finishes (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")
6. Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then select "Quarantine".
7. Under "Reports
8. Select "Automatically generate report after every scan"
9. Un-Select "Only if threats were found"
Close AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5, Do Not run a scan just yet, we will shortly.

* If you do not already have Ad-Aware SE 1.06 installed, follow these download and setup instructions. Also check for updates:
Ad-Aware SE Setup
Again, do NOT run a scan yet.

* Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1. Restart your computer
2. After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3. Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4. Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.
* Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen. Your desktop and icons will disappear and then reappear again --- this is normal.
Wait for the tool to complete and Disk Cleanup to finish --- this may take a while; please be patient.

* Next, run Ad-aware and perform a full scan. Remove everything found.
1. Lauch AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
2. Select the "Scanner" icon at the top and then the "Scan" tab then click on "Complete System Scan".
3. AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little time.
  Once the scan is complete do the following:
4. If you have any infections you will prompted, then select "Apply all actions"
5. Next select the "Reports" icon at the top.
6. Select the "Save report as" button in the lower left hand of the screen and save it to a text file on your system (make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important).
* Next go to Start -> Control Panel, click Display -> Desktop -> Customize Desktop -> Web -> Uncheck "Security Info" if present.

* Restart your computer in normal mode.

* Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only
If you use Firefox browser
If you use Opera browser
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

* Run the Panda online virus scan at http://www.pandasoftware.com/products/activescan.htm

- Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
- A new window will open...click the Check Now button
- Enter your Country
- Enter your State/Province
- Enter your e-mail address and click send
- Select either Home User or Company
- Click the big Scan Now button
- If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
- It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
- When download is complete, click on Local Disks to start the scan
- When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location.

* Finally, restart your computer once more, and please post a new HijackThis log as well as the log from the AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 scan and the log from the smitRem tool, which will be located at C:\smitfiles.txt.

thank you for your advice, I will try what you have posted....

Last night when shutting down it also said,,, could not initialize .... isamonitor.exe
I searched for that file and it is in the video active x folder in program files --- could not drag to trash cuz is currently being used by a program.

I hope doing the previous will help this to..

SO I REbooted in Safe Mode

It displayed an old looking version of XP. I tried to do a search for smitRem -- did not find anything...

I have no idea what smitRem or RunThis.bat is or where they are ???

I have noticed since running AVG in safe mode, and ATF my Norton auto protect virus has been turned off, and Norton is advising that Browsing is not safe. Norton tried to fix the problem by downloading the latest updates, but for some reason the turn on check wont stay turned on.

Any thoughts ? Did I do this right ? Cuz I still have probs with ALERTS, and system boot up speed is slllloooowwwww..... (maybe cuz of ad warae, avg, norton etc being all installed at once ) OR maybe their is still more spyware or keyloggers ????

Do I need to uncheck the hide system folders before I perform a hijack as well ?

ok... MY Norton has fixed itself.

But it takes an unusually long time for BOOT UP, plus the desktop icons don't all load properly right away either.

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) to your Desktop.

Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

**If the tool fails to launch from the Desktop, please move SmitfraudFix.exe directly to the root of the system drive (usually C:), and launch from there.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

You should print out these instructions, or copy them to a NotePad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
- Restart your computer
- After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
- Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
- Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
- Choose your usual account.
Once in Safe Mode, double-click on SmitfraudFix.exe
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart it into Normal Windows.
A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply with a new hijackthis log.
The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Warning : running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background.

Download roguescanfix_setup.

Doubleclick roguescanfix_setup to install it.

After the installation, you will be prompted if you would like to run roguescanfix now. Click "YES" to start the tool.

When you start roguescanfix.bat you'll see a menu:
1. Run Roguescanfix
2. Run sharedtasksrem

Choose option 1 by typing "1".

Note: This tool needs internet connection because it downloads an additional file to let the tool work properly.
If your firewall gives an alert, allow it instead of blocking it.
In case you still get the message BFU.exe is not present, download BFU.zip from here.
Unzip it and place BFU.exe in the c:\program files\roguescanfix-folder. Then doubleclick Roguescanfix.bat again.

The tool will uninstall some programs and delete related files and registrykeys.
When some files won't get deleted, it will ask you to reboot your system to delete the files after reboot.
Please make sure the uninstall of the programs are finished before you click Yes to reboot.

A textfile wil open. Place the contents of that file in your next reply, along with a new Hijackthis logfile.
(The textfile can also be found at c:\program files\roguescanfix\task.txt)

after rebooting this notice appeared on the desktop:

hpqthb08.exe application failed to initalize properly ( 0xc0000135) click OK to terminate APP

I pressed Ok

...... my computer seems to be booting up a bit quicker but the alert is still down in the notification area.

* After you check the items you want to fix, close all browsers and windows, except for HijackThis, then click on the Fix Checked button on HijackThis.

Your Java Runtime Environment is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

Updating Java:
- Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6.
- Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Enviroinment (JRE) 6, The Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
- Click the "Download" button to the right.
- Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
- The page will refresh.
- Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language and save it to your desktop (12.6 MB).
- Close any programs you may have running - especially any web browsers.
- Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
- Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
- Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
- Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
- Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
- Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6-windowsi586.exe to install the newest version.

I'm not sure how to reinstall HP IMAGEZONE, my computer (HP) came new with everything preinstalled -- the only back up disks I have are two Recovery CD's I made when I first turned on my computer ( right after computer purchase )

Can I do the rest of what you said to do before having to install the HP image Zone ?
